How do you know when to stem change?
You had to memorize a list of stem change verbs:
• Querer (e-ie)
• Empezar (e-ie)
• Jugar (u-ue)
• Pedir (e-i)
• Encontrar (o-ue)
• Etc…
When do you preterite stem change?
Stem changing in the preterite is EASY!!!! Follow
these three simple rules:
1. You stem change only “IR” verbs.
2. You only stem change the “ella” and “ellas”
forms.
3. The verb will only change from “E-I” or “O-U”.
4. You conjugate the other forms like normal.

Preterite Verbs with i > y
Spelling Change
Preterite i > y Spell Change Verbs
• Verbs ending in –uir, such as
destruir, have a spelling change
in the preterite.
• The i becomes y in the Ud/él/ella
and Uds./ellos/ellas forms.

• Other verbs such as
leer

follow a similar pattern.
