(NMDS)Organization is requesting support for the 2012 Long Island Community and Economic Development Conference for Small Businesses, MWBE Firms, Nonprofit Organizations & Social/Civic Groups. The mission of the Conference is to promote opportunities for nonprofits & social/civic groups in the areas of economic revitalization for their communities which create jobs and provide investment through social enterprise. Our mission for the business sector is to have a forum on how to do business in the State of New York. There will also be networking which focuses on supplier-diversity initatives for MWBE’s. The Conference will be an important forum for engaging the Long Island business community, educational & financial institutions, nonprofit leaders, elected officials, social/civic organizations, municipalities, governmental agencies and residents in one day of dialogue and networking. Conferences of this magnitude are traditionally in New York City and we find this is an ideal time to bring this wealth of knowledge to Long Island’s business sector. NEED FOR THE LONG ISLAND COMMUNITY AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CONFERENCE The Empire State Development Disparity Report indicates how the M/WBE audience continues to be underutilized. Through our conferences continued education and exposure for M/WBE to pursue contract opportunities we are confident these present statistics will take a more positive trend in Long Island’s near future. NEED FOR THE LONG ISLAND COMMUNITY AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CONFERENCE The NYS Department of Economic Development was commissioned to conduct a statewide disparity study regarding the participation of minority and women owned business enterprises in state contracts. The Department was also authorized to examine the past and current status of minority-owned and women-owned business enterprises (“M/WBEs”) in the geographic and product markets for contracting and procurement of the State of New York (hereinafter “the State” or “NYS”). The 2010 study finds both statistical and anecdotal evidence of business discrimination against M/WBEs in the State’s relevant market area. NEED FOR THE LONG ISLAND COMMUNITY AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CONFERENCE Next, we analyzed race and sex disparities in business owner earnings. We observed large, adverse and statistically significant business owner earnings disparities for AfricanAmericans, Hispanics, Asians, Native Americans, and non-minority women consistent with the presence of discrimination in these markets. NEED FOR THE LONG ISLAND COMMUNITY AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CONFERENCE Finally, as a further check on the statistical findings we examined evidence from the Census Bureau’s Survey of Business Owners and Self-Employed Persons (SBO). This data indicates large, adverse, and statistically significant disparities between M/WBEs’ share of overall revenues and their share of overall firms in the U.S. as a whole, and in the states of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. The size of the disparities facing minority and female-owned firms in these three states is striking. For example, although 6.65 percent of all firms in these three states are owned by African Americans, they earn barely 1.0 percent of all sales and receipts. African-American employer firms are 1.9 percent of the total but earn only 0.8 percent of sales and receipts. Disparities for women and for other minority groups are also very large in these three states. Clearly, this report indicates a much needed Long Island Community and Economic Development Conference which addresses this disparity report concerns. The additional component of educating the non-profit sector will also empower these organizations in creating a strong community economic paradigm. THE CONFERENCE PROGRAM The Long Island Community and Economic Development Conference will engage New York State and the L.I. business community, local municipalities, governmental agencies, elected officials, policy-makers, educational & financial institutions, non-profit groups, social/ civic organizations and residents. At this event, conversations from these roundtables will culminate into strategies, an action plan, best practices review, ideas for systems enhancements and implementation.
