The Circulatory System: Anatomy
Sheep Heart Dissection
• Identify the assigned superficial structures
on p174, #3.
• Make a coronal section
– Place the heart upside down, apex on the top
– Find the posterior interventricular suclus and
keep it in the middle
– With a scalpel cut around the apex, towards
the auricles, try not to saw
– Identify the assigned structures on p175, #4
The Human Heart
Major Arteries
Major Veins
Use right arm and left leg to study the arteries and veins of systemic circuit in limbs;
except for great saphenous vein (look on the right leg)
Coronary Circulation
(supplies the heart muscle)
Coronary sinus: look for a big blue vein at the posterior side
Circle of Willis
(circulation to the brain)
Hepatic Portal Circulation
(shunts blood from digestive organs to the liver for final
metabolism and detoxification and from liver to the inferior
vena cava for return to the heart)
Fetal Circulation
(designed to by-pass fetal lung)
Lymphatic System
(related to body defense mechanisms)
Demonstration Stations
• Fig 10.11 & 10.12, p175 & 176: model &
microscope slide of cardiac muscle cells
• Fig 10.13, p176: microscope slide of blood
vessels
– Arteries have thicker wall
– Veins have collapsed wall
