A national association of marketing students A co-curricular organization available for students who are interested in the following: – – – – – – hospitality finance sales and service advertising business management entrepreneurship 3 Civic Consciousness Includes the following: – improving local communities through service – understanding and appreciating civic responsibilities – supporting charitable and community causes, such as: • Muscular Dystrophy Association • Race for the Cure • Make-A-Wish Foundation 4 Leadership Development Includes the following: – serving as a local, state or national officer – participating in leadership activities or training – attending regional and state conferences – practicing teamwork, communication skills and goal setting – planning and organizing meetings, activities and service projects 5 Social Intelligence Emphasizes the role of networking and social interaction Teaches the importance of interpersonal and business skills – social intelligence activities could include: • • • • a regional DECA dance a professional etiquette dinner chapter socials and activities a DECA “sports night” at the local stadium 6 Vocational Understanding Refers to career-based concepts and knowledge Encourages students to learn applicable marketing skills Activity ideas may include: – – – – – participating in on-the-job training managing a school store/enterprise recruiting guest speakers participating in competitive DECA events planning a business field trip 7 Interesting Facts DECA’s official colors are blue and gold DECA was founded in 1946 as the Distributive Educational Club of America; It later expanded into “An Association of Marketing Students” 86% of DECA members will pursue postsecondary education 8 DECA Membership DECA has over 180,000 members worldwide DECA operates in all 50 states plus Puerto Rico, the District of Columbia, Guam, the Virgin Islands, Canada, Mexico and Germany There are nearly 5,000 marketing classes taught in the United States Alumni, college and professional memberships are also available Members pay minimal costs for dues each year 9 College and Career Ready DECA College Ready Video Organizational Structure The national DECA organization is divided into four regions: – North Atlantic Region – Central Region – Southern Region – Western Region 11 National Regions 12 National Organization DECA is governed by a National Board of Directors which includes students officers, advisors, sponsors and staff members A national DECA president is elected by members each year at the International Career Development Conference A Vice President is also elected from each of the four national regions 13 Local Organization Each state is governed by a president and a variety of elected and appointed student officers Each school or local chapter also selects officers to serve in a variety of capacities, such as: – – – – – Public Relations Vice President Activities Vice President Treasurer Secretary Web Master 14 President: Elizabeth Phinney Oversees entire chapter including members and officers. 3rd year Marketing and DECA member. Deposits all money to business office Informs us if we have money to spend Tracks all fundraisers. 1st year Marketing student and DECA member. 18 Parliamentarian: Rebeca Hidalgo Enforces DECA Law and Rules Enrolled in 5th period Fashion Marketing 3rd year Marketing and DECA member. Attended State competition the last two years. 19 Historian: Paulina Flores Accounts for all pictures and video of event, creates scrap book. Enrolled in 2nd period Marketing Dynamics. 3rd year Marketing and DECA member. Work at State Farm Insurance 20 Reporter: Victoria Compean Responsible for informing the school community and DECA members of all events. Works closely with all media to ensure the DECA image is protected and well portrayed. Enrolled in 2nd period Marketing Dynamics 21 Community Service Chair: Diana Howell Plans and organizes all community service projects for our DECA chapter. Enrolled in 5th period Fashion Marketing. 22 Special Events Chair: Christy Rodriguez Plans and organizes all DECA events. Pass and present all ideas through Christy.
