and most importantly to brighten your day 

“Extra Things” to know to be successful in
American Literature:
*Every class period we will start with vocabulary from the “red” packet.
These words you will be quizzed over every other Friday and they will build
upon each other until the final test for first semester. So YES, these will be
worth a great deal of points. These words are exceptionally important to
how you will score on the state reading test. I refuse to let you fail. That is
not an option to me.
*State tests consume your junior year. They are important to the school
district as a whole, but also to your success in this class. Grades will be
taken according to how you score on the state writing test in January and
the state reading test in March. IF you pass these tests you will NOT be
required to take the semester final. Trust me… after you have had me for
awhile and start understanding what my tests are like… you will do
EVERYTHING in your power to pass the state tests.
*Grades in this class will be weighted as to the below formula:
80%- tests, quizzes, performance based items
20%- daily work, participation
Please keep in mind that I do NOT give busy work or useless “grade
checks”. Every assignment you are given will be graded by
me…question by question. Nearly all of your grades will come from
the TEST/QUIZ/PERFORMANCE area of the weights.
AMERICAN LIT “EXTRAS” CONT.
*Curriculum for first semester:
“Red Packet” vocabulary
Intro to American Lit
Crucible/ Salem Witch Trials
Devin and Tom Walker
Edgar Allen Poe/ Gothic Lit
Huckleberry Finn
WRITING, WRITING, and more WRITING
*During the day I can answer questions, or help rebuild concepts with you
during 4th period or during ARC. I also am available for questions before
school starting at 7:30 am (unless I have cheerleading practice), or after
school until 4:00. Another way to get ahold of me is by email at
jhamann@esu4.org
*You will find class information as well as weekly, or monthly lesson plans
on the American Lit fusion page found on the Auburn Public Schools web
page under teachers and Mrs. Hamann. You will be given calendars month
by month with every unit, due date and test given that month. THIS MAKES
ANY EXCUSE OF NO VALUE TO ME. YOU HAVE AMPLE TIME TO PREPARE.
*Every day you will be taking notes, reading, or highlighting out of packets.
You MUST be organized. I will not give you information that is “wasteful”;
which means everything you take notes over or highlight WILL BE on tests.
Success in this class comes ONLY from hard work, following directions, and
working toward every expectation, test, and due date planned for.
