Press Release: May 9, 2014
04-09-2014: A resident of Passaic Street reported that someone filed their taxes under his social security
number. The resident did not know how the individual got his social security number. His accountant
reported it to the IRS and had to file his taxes manually using a pin number assigned to him by the IRS.
04-09-2014: Sergeant Robert Carroll arrested Parul Patel-Vyas, age 42, of Chatham on an outstanding
active warrant out of the Springfield Municipal Court. Ms. Patel-Vyas was stopped for improper passing
and a check of her license revealed that it was suspended. She was released after posting bail and given a
mandatory New Providence Municipal Court date.
04-09-2014: Patrolman David Rodriguez arrested Jesus Quintela, age 35, of Parsippany with theft after a
Borough gas station reported that Mr. Quintela left without knowingly paying for the gas that was put in his
vehicle’s tank. Mr. Quintela was stopped approximately one mile from the gas station after the attendant
contact the police department. He was released pending a municipal court date.
04-09-2014: A manager from a South Street business reported that she interrupted the theft of the store’s
decorative exterior sign. The manager spoke with the suspect who left the sign upon being confronted. The
manager copied his license plate down as he left the scene. The attempted theft and suspect identification is
currently under investigation by the Detective Bureau.
04-13-2014: Corporal Chad Wilson arrested Jair Lazaro, age 25, of the Borough with eluding police,
resisting arrest, obstruction of the administration of the law, disorderly conduct and several motor vehicle
violations after Corporal Wilson attempted to stop Mr. Lazaro for a motor vehicle violation. Mr. Lazaro,
who was operating a motorcycle, did not pull over for Corporal Wilson’s patrol vehicle that had its lights
and sirens activated. Mr. Lazaro made numerous other motor vehicle violations before he became stuck in
traffic on Mountain Avenue. Mr. Lazaro was released pending a Superior Court date.
04-14-2014: Patrolman Andrew Diamond arrested Abdul-Qadir English, age 34, of East Orange with
possession of marijuana under 50 grams after Mr. English was arrested on an active outstanding warrant out
of Montclair. He was released to the custody of the Montclair Police Department and given a mandatory
New Providence municipal court date.
04-15-2014: Patrolman Andrew Diamond arrested Paul Kamichoff, age 38, of Rahway for robbery after
Mr. Kamichoff was confronted for shoplifting by the store manager. Mr. Kamichoff was stopped before
he left the store. He proceeded to push the store manager in attempts to flee the store but was subdued by
the employees before he could leave. Mr. Kamichoff was arrested and transported to the Union County Jail

on $25,000.00 bail. He was also charged with possession of heroin, possession of syringes, and possession
of drug paraphernalia. Mr. Kamichoff was identified as the shoplifter from four other crimes in the same
store that occurred on March 19th, March 20th, March 29th, and April 10th and was given mandatory court
dates for each of the thefts.
04-17-2014: A store manager, from a business in the center of town, reported a shoplifting that occurred at
8:00 pm. The suspect was described as a black female in her late 30’s to early 40’s who was accompanied
by a black female in her 60’s and a black juvenile female approximately 7 to 10 years old.
04-17-2014: The store manager, from a downtown business, reported another shoplifting theft that occurred
approximately one hour later at 9:00 pm. This suspect was said to have been a white female in her late 20’s
to early 30’s. Both thefts are currently under investigation by the detective bureau and do not appear to be
related.
04-18-2014: Patrolman Michael Scuorzo arrested Ron Tookes, age 38, of Newark on a no bail child
support warrant out of the Burlington County Sheriff’s Office. The warrant was identified during a
different investigation that Mr. Tookes was a witness to. He was arrested and placed in the custody of the
Burlington County Sheriff’s Office.
04-22-2014: Patrolman Daniel Nozza arrested Michael Melango, age 19, of Mountainside for driving while
under the influence and for possession of marijuana under 50 grams after he was found asleep in the
driver’s seat of his vehicle at a green traffic signal on Springfield Avenue. An investigation and field
sobriety tests were completed by patrol units. Mr. Melango was released to a suitable adult pending a
municipal court date.
04-24-2014: Patrolman Andrew Diamond arrested Seth Ratner, age 26, of Dallas, Texas for driving while
intoxicated after his vehicle was stopped for failing to maintain lamps and accelerating at a high rate of
speed after being stopped at a red light. Mr. Ratner was arrested after an investigation and field sobriety
tests were completed by Patrolman Diamond. Mr. Ratner was released to a suitable adult pending a
municipal court date.
04-26-2014: Corporal Steven Opalewski arrested Cory Hammond, age 27, of Fords on an outstanding
active warrant out of the Mountainside and Edison Municipal Courts after he was stopped for failing to
wear his seatbelt. A check of Mr. Hammond’s license revealed that his license was suspended along with
the active warrants. Mr. Hammond posted bail on one of the warrants and was released on his own
recognizance for the other. He was charged with the seatbelt and suspended license violations and released
pending a municipal court date.
04-27-2014: Patrolman David Rodriquez arrested Gary Bremer, age 58, of the Borough on an active
outstanding warrant out of Pohatcong Township. Mr. Bremer’s vehicle was stopped after a license plate
inquiry revealed that his vehicle was unregistered.
04-28-2014: Corporal Steven Opalewski arrested Deborah Bredahl, age 52, of Westfield on two active
outstanding warrants out of Westfield after Ms. Bredahl was stopped for using her cell phone without a
hands-free device.
