Additional requirements for the course:
1. All students should have a 2-3 inch 3-ring binder for course work and handouts.
2. A comprehensive German-English dictionary is strongly recommended.
Course Philosophy and Goals
1. In this class you will be expected to listen, speak, read and write German. Interaction and
communication are essential to this class, and I expect everyone to be actively engaged and
participate at all times.
2. Attendance is expected and required. If you are unable to make class, please make sure you
contact me ahead of time so I can give you any important materials needed. Absences will be
severely detrimental to your progress as this course will move at a quick pace. If you miss a class
in which we take a quiz or exam and you do not notify me in advance (at least one day
before the class date) you will not be given a chance to make up the work. I am very
understanding and willing to work with you, but I need to have advance notice. Unexcused
absences will result in a 0 for the participation grade for that class.
3. Homework is also mandatory. Unless specific permission is granted by me in advance, no late
work will be accepted.
4. As we will be exploring a foreign language and culture, open minds are a must. Come to each
class with an open mind and a desire to learn. This will not only help you progress as a learner; it
will also help your classmates and result in an invigorating and stimulating classroom
atmosphere.
5. Take as much from this class as you can. However, as we will only be spending less than 4 hours
a week together, try to take your learning outside of the classroom. Listen to German music,
watch a German film, try some authentic German food, read a German newspaper, etc. You will
be amazed at how much you can learn from these experiences. I will also be happy to give you
some suggestions and recommendations if you like.
