Grade 9 Mathematics: INFORMATION AND EXPECTATIONS
Course Overview
This program is designed to ensure that students build a solid foundation in mathematics; they should,
for example, understand a range of mathematical concepts, memorize necessary mathematical facts
(e.g., multiplication tables), learn and practice standard mathematical procedures, and apply
mathematics in complex real-world situations.
All the knowledge and skills listed in the course outline for the mathematics program are mandatory
and are taken from the Atlantic Canada Mathematics Curriculum. The following is a list of the general
topics:

Classroom Expectations

Rules: Show work at all times, use a pencil only, be on time, respect speaker, respect
furniture, no food or drinks, complete homework assignments, participate to the best of your
ability.
Homework: Students will usually have time in class to begin their homework (assigned daily).
Homework will be checked and reviewed the following class. All work should be corrected by
the student and kept for future reference. Occasionally, homework will be collected to be
marked.
Absences: In the event of absence, it is the student’s responsibility to learn the material
covered in class, to get the notes from another student, and to complete the work assigned for
that day. The student should contact a homework buddy, and come in for extra help if
necessary. Any quizzes or tests must be made up as soon as possible. If you are aware of an
absence ahead of time, notify your teacher.
Textbook: Password for E- textbook will be given to each student. Other available textbooks
and handouts will also be used as a supplement in class. Students are responsible for bringing

their textbook to all classes and for maintaining the condition of the textbook throughout the
year. A fee will be charged in June for lost or damaged textbooks.
Assignments: Student work should be handed in on time. Late assignments must be handed in
before the assignment has been marked and returned to the class, or the assignment WILL
NOT BE ACCEPTED.
Mental Math: Classes will begin with a mental math activity. The students are given a
template in which they will complete 8-10 math questions each day. It is collected at the end
of each topic or week and marked. This begins promptly at the start of the period so, getting
to class on time is very important.
Extra Help: Extra help is available after school on a regular basis. Students should make
arrangements to meet with the teacher, and are encouraged to do so as often as needed.
Students coming in for extra help should bring assignments or homework they have questions
about.
Materials: The following materials should be brought to class each day: book, binder with
lined paper, pencil, and an eraser. Later in the year students will need a geometry set with a
protractor and compass. A calculator will be necessary as students are learning and practicing
mathematical procedures. Students should have a calculator with them at all times.
Course Evaluation
Assessment will be ongoing and the curriculum outcomes will be evaluated using two or three different
evaluation events (quizzes, projects, mini assignments, math journals, tests) through the course of the year.
The following codes are used to summarize the student’s performance in grade nine:
Level 4
In-depth knowledge and understanding of content and concepts. Able to extend the application of related skills.
Level 3+
Competent +
Level 3
Competent knowledge and understanding of content and concepts. Appropriate application of the related skills.
Level 2+
Developing +
Level 2
Developing knowledge and understanding of content and concepts. Developing in the application of the related skills.
Level 1+
Limited +
Level 1
Limited knowledge and understanding of content and concepts. Limited application of related skills.
