Murray Course Code: MAT 1L Course Website: Prerequisite: None http://murmath.wikispaces.com/ __________________________________________________________________________ Course Description: This course emphasizes further development of mathematical knowledge and skills to prepare students for success in their everyday lives, in the workplace, in the Grade 10 LDCC course, and in the Mathematics Grade 11 and Grade 12 Workplace Preparation courses. The course is organized by three strands related to money sense, measurement, and proportional reasoning. In all strands, the focus is on developing and consolidating key foundational mathematical concepts and skills by solving authentic, everyday problems. Students have opportunities to further develop their mathematical literacy and problem-solving skills and to continue developing their skills in reading, writing, and oral language through relevant and practical math activities. Evaluations may also include quizzes and/or assignments. Unit tests are weighted more. 8% 70 % 15 % 15 % Culminating Task Final Exam As stated in the Ontario Mathematics Curriculum (2008), the four categories (knowledge, inquiry, communication, and application) should be considered as interrelated, reflecting the wholeness and interconnectedness of learning. Based on the overall expectation, one or more of the categories will be more emphasized. Missed Tests and Missed Assignment Policy Students will be given reasonable time to prepare for tests and complete assignments. It is the student’s responsibility to write tests on time and submit assignments on the due date. Students who cannot meet the due date must discuss and negotiate an alternate date with the teacher. Consideration will be given providing it does not give them an unfair advantage over the other students. A mark of zero will be assigned to all work submitted after the assignment is returned to the class. Students should refer to the Orchard Park Culture of Responsibility Policy found in the Student Agenda. Homework Regular homework is a fundamental part of each math class. Students should expect approximately thirty minutes of math homework each day. Homework will be checked for completion and will be collected for evaluation and assessment on a regular basis. Plagiarism Students should be familiar with the Orchard Park Plagiarism and Documentation Policy found in the Student Agenda.
