COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is designed to prepare students for a dynamic
profession in which managers plan, analyze, make decisions, evaluate results, solve
problems, supervise, lead, train, and learn. Therefore, managers require a number of
skills and abilities to perform a multiplicity of tasks and functions. Management offers a
challenging field with unlimited opportunities in a variety of areas including profit and
non-profit organizations as well as government agencies.

COURSE OUTCOMES: The following outcomes have been adopted for this course.
All outcomes listed below have direct relevance to course material. Upon completion of
this course students are expected to:
1. Students will better understand the history of American management philosophies and
practices from the early foundations of this country through today’s modern-day
corporate structures.
2. Students will understand and be able to properly apply the correct leadership Style(s) to
motivate and develop those individuals over whom they have managerial
responsibilities.

Exams: Exams will be in a written format composed of Multiple choice, True/False, and
short answer. Make up exams are not an option, unless extreme hardship can be proven.
Quizzes: Quizzes will be given at the completion of each chapter and will be composed
of Multiple choice, True/False, and short answer. Make up exams are not an option,
unless extreme hardship can be proven.
Writing & Presentation Requirements: Students will submit a major research paper
during the semester (see schedule for due date). You will be expected to select a
Manager/Owner of your choosing and conduct a research paper on that individual. The
paper must include a comprehensive history both personal and professional. In addition,
you must explain your Manager/Owner in light of at least two topics discussed this
semester. This may be Management Style, Decision Making, Planning, Organizational
Structure,
Entrepreneurship,
Motivation,
Leadership,
Human
Resources,
Communications, and the list goes on and on. You must prove functional knowledge by
simply relating only two topics to your Manager/Owner subject. Research must be
conducted and referenced by using any written or on-line business/financial database.
This research paper will be at least 8 pages & no more than 10 pages in length (this
includes Title Page and Reference Pages, 1.5-spaced, and electronically submitted via email to the instructor on or before the due date. I expect the paper to be APA style.
Plagiarism will not be tolerated. Please list your sources of reference. The presentation
will be a 5 minute audio/visual power point presentation also submitted by e-mail.
Attendance & preparedness: Students are expected to stay current with the online
schedule of assignments.
Late Assignments Policy: Late assignments and submissions will be granted only for
extreme family or personal emergencies. It is the student’s responsibility to communicate
with the instructor, in a timely fashion, regarding any such emergency situations. The
final decision, as to what constitutes a valid emergency, will be at the instructor’s
discretion.
Expected Goals and Objectives/Learning Outcomes: As stated in the “Introduction”,
this course is designed to prepare future managers to understand and employ strategies to
plan, organize, make decisions, evaluate results, solve problems, lead, train, and learn
from the employees that they will be responsible to manage. Secondarily, the on-line
format and required student discipline, will prepare students for independent research
methods and appropriate study techniques and time management.

ACADEMIC DISHONESTY: Any person committing an act of plagiarism, cheating,
attendance fraud, or other form of academic dishonesty is subject to the fullest measure
of consequences, including course failure and suspension. Students caught committing an
act of academic dishonesty will receive an automatic failing grade for the course and will
not be allowed to drop that course.
