IB Biology II 2007-2008 WELCOME BACK SENIORS!!! This is the second year of HL Biology. We have two semesters of hard work in front of us. This year in IB Biology we will cover Anatomy and Physiology as well as review for the IB test (those not testing. . .we’ll talk later). As we tackle this challenging year, keep in mind the overall goal of IB Biology: “secure knowledge of a limited body of facts and at the same time a broad general understanding of the subject” as well as the four themes 1) structure and function 2) universality vs. diversity 3) equilibrium within systems and 4) evolution. We will have a great time and learn a great deal. Expectations: Turn in a safety contract addendum, signed by the student and parent BEFORE being allowed to participate in any laboratory activities. The Flinn Student Safety Contract is to be kept in the student’s binder at all times. Follow safety rules at all times. Attend class 100 % of the time! Many labs are difficult to make up. Also, due to the subject matter, it is difficult to keep up if class is missed. Make up work within two days for each day of an absence. Students may make up labs during lunch and after school. Late labs will receive 50 % of the credit they earn. Late assignments are not accepted. Be in your seat at the tardy bell with materials (textbook, binder, paper, pencils, calculator, assignment, etc.). Tardy means you are not in the classroom when the bell rings. Truant means you are more than 10 minutes late without an excuse or you are not where you are supposed to be. See the school rules for disciplinary action with respect to tardies and truancies. Remain quiet until everyone has completed tests or quizzes. Bathroom passes are not granted during tests or quizzes. Cheating will not be tolerated. If you are caught cheating, you will receive a zero grade and your parents will be notified. Cooperate with and be respectful to every member of the classroom. Follow teacher instructions, listen when others are speaking, use appropriate language and have appropriate discussions. Participate in all activities and remain on task until the end of the period. We will not be gathering at the door or leaving before the dismissal bell rings. Clean up all work areas at the end of labs and activities. Cell Phones Cell phones are not to be used in any way during class. They are to be turned off and put away before you enter the room. If seen, a cell phone will be taken away from the student and turned in to the main office. It can be picked up at the end of the school day. For repeated cell phone infractions, parents/guardians will be contacted or a referral will be given. See the student handbook for details. Grading Scale A 93% C 73% A- 90% C- 70% B+ 87% D+ 67% B 83% D 60% B- 80% F less than 60% C+ 77% Weighting of Grade Tests and Quizzes (45%) Tests will represent a sampling of the material we have discussed in class, from assignments, labs or assigned reading. Your final for the first two trimesters will be included in this category. Advance notice is not always given for quizzes so come to class prepared. Labs (25%) Every student will have a lab portfolio. All labs from IB Bio I and IB Bio II must be kept together! Several of our labs are dissections. All labs are mandatory. Group 4 Project (10%) This is a collaborative investigation that you, the students, design, implement, write up and verbally present. This is an investigation conducted by all students. There will be several due dates throughout the first two trimesters. The first is fast approaching. . .more on this later. Assignments (20%) These will come from a variety of sources. Some assignments will be graded, some will not. Extra Credit You will be given one opportunity to do extra credit each semester. Lab Portfolio: Each student is required to maintain a lab portfolio. The purpose of this is to create an organized record of your laboratory experiences in a manner that is accessible. It will be used to determine you internal assessment grade. Every lab you did in your junior year, as well as every lab you do this year must be saved in this portfolio. Lab Safety: You are expected to adhere to the lab safety rules. Infractions result in immediate discipline. This could include being sent to the office, a parent conference, loss of points, or removal from the class. Especially important are: 1. Follow all directions. 2. Wear GOGGLES whenever instructed to do so. 3. NO DANGEROUS ACTS OR MISUSE OF MATERIALS WILL BE TOLERATED. 4. Federal law prohibits eating or drinking in any science lab/classroom. This includes water bottles and gum chewing. Cosmetics should not be applied in the classroom. Lunch sacks and water bottles should only be brought to class if they are in a backpack. 5. Wear close-toed shoes and aprons when instructed to do so. 6. No student is allowed in ANY science classroom until the teacher is present. 7. If you break equipment or waste materials, you buy them! 8. Wash hands after lab. 9. Clean up your area. 10. Read the Flinn Scientific Student Safety Contract.
