METHOD STATEMENT Company: Martin & Gerard (Electrical Contractors) Ltd Site: Broadstone Group – 47 Albion Street, Dewsbury Date: 26/8/2010 Ref: MG 1573 The Work/Task: The work involved is carrying out the electrical installation for a new build and part refurbishment of a Doctors Surgery. Martin & Gerard (Electrical Contractors) Ltd has produced this document for the work they are to carry out which is part of a larger overall project which is under the control of the Broadstone Group. Who will carry out the work? Trained operatives employed by Martin & Gerard (Electrical Contractors) Ltd What tools and equipment are required? Employees trade tools and equipment with the addition of electrical portable tools such as: Dewalt DC213KB 24volt battery drill; Makita BHR200SJE 24volt battery drill; Makita 6347DWAE 18volt battery drill; Makita BDF451RFE 18volt battery drill; Makita HR2410X 110volt SDS drill; Makita 8419B 110volt drill; Makita HR3520 110volt breaker. What materials are used? Electrical wiring and fittings such as - twin & earth electrical wiring; plastic wall back boxes; plastic switched socket outlet faces and light switch faces; plastic ceiling roses and lamp holders. Summary of hazards involved (detailed in attached risk assessments): Manual handling; over balancing incidents; electric shocks; vibration injuries; noise induced hearing injuries; respiratory irritations; site activities. Summary of control measures to be used (detailed in attached risk assessment): Training in the following: Manual handling techniques; use of access equipment such as platform steps; use of portable tools and equipment; wearing and use of PPE such as ear defenders, dust masks, gloves and goggles; good house keeping procedures; awareness of others on site. MARTIN & GERARD (ELECTRICAL CONTRACTORS) LTD Are any of the following specific assessments required (if YES attach to this form) Control of Substances Hazardous to health (COSHH) YES NO Noise YES NO Vibration YES NO Manual handling YES NO Control of lead YES NO Young persons YES NO Brief outline of how the work is to be done (i.e. sequence/method): Prior to commencement of work all Martin & Gerard (Electrical Contractors) Ltd’s site operatives will be inducted by the Site Manager for Broadstone Group, on the site procedures and safety issues applicable to the work activity and will sign the section at the end of this form to indicate that they have read and understood the risk assessment and method statement. All operatives will have the required PPE i.e. safety boots, hi visibility vests, safety helmets, gloves, goggles, overalls etc. which will be worn at all times or as dictated by the work activity. Generally, all of our work is manual, carried out by hand with the aid of hand held portable tools, both manually operated and electrically powered. All our operatives are fully trained Electricians and are well aware of the need for good and safe methods of work and we endeavour to maintain safe and tidy working areas so as not to present any risks to others. The new electrical installations will follow the following procedures: 1st Fixing: The majority of the wiring will be laid over and clipped to the tops of the ceiling joists, operatives reaching the working level from platform steps (refer to risk assessment) and prior to the ceiling boards being fitted and plastering carried out, the cables will then be fed down the stud walls and/or partitions drilling holes using either a battery operated and/or a 110volt powered drill to drill the timber studs and noggins as required in order to feed the cabling to the required position of the socket outlet and/or light switch. Note: there maybe instances where holes need to be drilled in the brickwork and/or floor slab to allow for cables to be passed to the outside. 2nd Fixing: Once all the cables have been pulled in to the required positions and locations the back boxes for the socket outlets and light switches will be fixed to the relevant timber stud and/or noggin and the cables fed in and ends stripped and attached to the face plate of the relevant fitting. Once others have over boarded the ceilings and plastering works have been completed the ceiling roses will be fixed to the ceiling with screws into the ceiling joists above, again the cables will be fed in and ends stripped and attached to the fitting, then lighting cable dropped from the fitting with the attached bulb holder. Testing: MARTIN & GERARD (ELECTRICAL CONTRACTORS) LTD All the wiring and fitting of the relevant installations will be carried out whilst the circuits are “dead” and will only be made “live” to carry out the required testing and commissioning so that it conforms to the 17th Edition national standard IEE Wiring Regulations (BS 7671). Completion of works and waste disposal: At completion of our works our operatives will ensure that their work activity area is left clear by placing all waste into the appropriately marked skips provided by Broadstone Group i.e. plastic wrappings and cardboard packaging etc. We will remove from site all offcutts of electrical cable and any faulty fluorescent light fittings, both of these items will be returned to the company premises and from there taken to the appropriate waste disposal centre for recycling and in the case of the fluorescent light fittings returned to the wholesaler for disposal. Carrington Position: Contracts Director Reviewing Procedures: Should any of our standard working practices change significantly and/or new regulations and legislation come into force then this document will be reviewed and altered accordingly to take into account those changes. MARTIN & GERARD (ELECTRICAL CONTRACTORS) LTD WELFARE, FIRST AID, ACCIDENT REPORTING, PPE SPECIFICATIONS AND APPENDICES: WELFARE: Broadstone Group will ensure that welfare arrangements in compliance with Schedule 2 of the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2007 are available for all site operatives to use and they are in a clean and tidy condition. All Martin & Gerard (Electrical Contractors) Ltd’s operatives will ensure that they reciprocate the cleanliness standards by clearing all their waste food and wrappings etc. and placing them in the waste bins provided. FIRST AID: A first aid kit will be available in the company vehicle to treat minor injuries such as small cuts/grazes that need a plaster etc., but Broadstone Group will provide a fully trained First Aider trained to the required HSE standards for administering First Aid on construction sites. All operatives will be advised at their site induction of the location of First Aid assistance and also where a telephone is located should an ambulance need to be called. ACCIDENT REPORTING: All accidents no matter how minor will be reported in line with the requirements of Section 15 of Martin & Gerard (Electrical Contractors) Ltd’s “Safe Working Procedures Manual”, and also will be reported to Broadstone Group’s Site Manager who will enter the details in the “Site Accident Book”. Note: the “Site Accident Book” needs to conform to the requirements of Data Protection Act in that the personal information about individuals can be easily detached for storage in an alternative secure location. Should the accident be of a more serious nature and require hospital treatment and subsequent investigation, then Broadstone Group as Broadstone Group will have the duty of reporting to the authorities, any accident and/or dangerous occurrence notifiable under the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1995.
