COURSE ORGANIZATION This class meets twice a week. But all homework assignments are done online. Online participation does not have specific meeting times, but completion of online assignments, is required. These types of courses are designed for students who are independent, self-motivated learners with strong organizational and time-management skills. Additionally, students need to have access to a reliable, internet-ready computer several times a week, and should be proficient in using internet based learning systems such as Blackboard and in performing basic computer tasks, such as word processing, uploading and downloading audio, video, and text files, and checking email. 2. COURSE DESCRIPTION This course provides an introduction to differential and integral calculus with specific applications to business and social science. The use of technology (e.g., graphing calculator, an algebraic system, etc.) and writing as appropriate to the discipline will be emphasized in this course. 3. COURSE EXEPECTED TO SERVE This calculus course is designed specifically for students in business and the social sciences and does not count toward a major or minor in mathematics. 4. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES Upon satisfactory completion of the course, students will be able to: 1. Estimate limits and derivatives graphically and by using tables of values. 2. Calculate limits of functions algebraically. 3. Calculate derivatives of functions using the definition of a derivative. 4. Calculate derivatives of functions using the sum, product, quotient and chain rules. 5. Determine the equation of a tangent line to the graph of a function. 6. Determine local and absolute extrema for functions in one variable. 7. Apply derivatives to problems involving optimization. 8. Determine antiderivatives of functions. 9. Evaluate definite integrals by using the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus. 10. Calculate integrals using substitution, integration by parts methods, and integration tables. 11. Calculate partial derivatives of a function in two variables. 12. Determine local extrema for functions in two variables. 13. Communicate effectively in both written and oral forms (Truman Goal #1) 14. Demonstrate the ability to think critically, abstractly and logically (Truman Goal #3) 15. Work with a variety of technologies (Truman Goal #4) 5. TEXTBOOK AND REQUIRED SUPPLIES 1145 W. GRADING POLICY HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS (25%) There will be graded online reading/video and exercise homework assignments on each section of the text covered in this class. For the exercise homework assignments, you will get immediate feedback on each problem, and incorrectly worked problems can be repeated (with a new version of the problem provided after 3 attempts) until a correct solution is obtained. Tips and examples are available online for each problem, in addition to the help available from your instructor and the Tutoring Center. Homework may be done at any location with an internet access. Do not wait till the last hour to start and complete homework assignments because a computer glitch may prevent you from accessing your account. Any homework assignment done after the due date will incur a loss of 15% of the total score.
