It was authorized to confer master degrees in 1981 and PHD degrees in 1998. The subject was listed as Key Discipline by the Ministry of Transport in 1996. At present, the subject is known in China for its leading research capability. Faculty of this major have successively undertaken more than 300 projects, including National Natural Science Foundation Projects, projects of provincial level and other application projects, some of which have achieved most advanced level in China.
