The Fifth Year Scholar program offers an opportunity for a small number of exceptional
students to remain at Carnegie Mellon for one full year following the completion of their
normal course of study, supported by full tuition and a $7000 scholarship grant. The program is
designed to provide outstanding students with an opportunity to pursue a broadened
educational background—in a different area than their major field of study. The program gives
students a chance for personal and professional growth through both academic work and a
community impact project, while allowing the campus community to benefit from their
extended stay at Carnegie Mellon. Recipients must complete the additional year at Carnegie
Mellon’s Pittsburgh campus.
The selection of Scholars occurs during the junior year (or fourth year for Architecture majors).
Students on schedule to complete their degree requirements in May of 2017 are eligible to
apply now to be a Scholar for 2017-2018. The main selection criteria for the scholarship are
exceptional academic performance and promise, co-curricular involvement and the
development of a community impact proposal. Applicants will be asked to participate in an
interview with the associate dean from their home college, current scholars and the fifth year
program advisor. Applicants are asked to identify a project advisor, who will provide both
project advisement as well as financial assistance for project, if necessary. This can be direct
monetary support or assistance in securing needed financial support.
The deadline for application is Friday, February 12, 2016. You must include a letter of support
from your project advisor as well as two additional written references from individuals in
support of your application. Applications need to be submitted electronically to
reneec@andrew.cmu.edu while references and a letter of support from advisor can be
submitted in hard copy to the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs in Warner Hall or directly
emailed.
Thank you for your interest in the Fifth Year Scholar program. Please contact me at (412) 2682075 or by email with any questions regarding the application process.
Sincerely,
Renee Camerlengo
