Introduction to the Course
This is a full-year course for those who have successfully completed French I. In this course, you will continue to develop
skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. You will further develop and refine the skills you learned in French I, as
well as widen your conversational abilities to include more complex grammar patterns and new tenses. In French II, you
will be expected to read and write more frequently than in French I.
I am looking forward to working and learning with each and every one of you this year.

Review: school, date, time, weather, preferences, places, daily activities, questions

Rules and Expectations
● Be on time: In your assigned seat working on the bellwork activity when the bell rings.
● Obtain permission before leaving your seat for any reason.
● Be prepared for class with necessary materials.
● When I am talking, you are listening.
● Raise your hand when you want to speak.
● Respect people and property. Putdowns and negative remarks will not be tolerated.
● No food or drinks. No chewing gum.
● The bell does not release you - I do.
● Take care of restroom and drinking foundain needs before class.
● Keep all electronics off and put away.
Procedures
● A daily bellwork activity will be posted as you enter the room. Sit in your assigned seat and begin to work on
this immediately.
● Homework is checked in during bellwork time. Have your homework on your desk while you are working on
bellwork so I can give you credit.
● When I need to get your attention, I will raise my hand and count backwards from three. When I get to zero, all
students should be quiet and attentive.
● Participate in the call-and-response routines to begin and end class.
Required Supplies for French class - Please have all materials by the second week of class.

What to do if you are struggling in French
1. Spend a little bit of time using French every day.
ex: Tell your family one French sentence daily – and what it means!
ex: Think in French when you are watching TV, brushing your teeth, in the car, etc.
ex: Explore the resources on the classroom website (www.wix.com/kumparki/chez-mlle-kumpar)
2. Complete homework assignments and bellwork activities.
3. Organize your French folder and remove work for other classes. Keep vocabulary sheets close by.
4. Talk to me - we can set up a time for you to get extra help.
Plagiarism Policy
Please refer to your student handbook for the Terry High School plagiarism policies and ramifications. In addition to this
school policy, I am adding these additional items:
Online Dictionaries/Text Translators
 Online dictionaries, which look up single words as opposed to paragraphs of text, are great resources for
students of French. There are plenty of online French/English dictionaries out there, and I recommend
http://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english-french.
 You cannot, however, use text translators that translate more than a single word at a time, such as
Google Translate, Free Translation, Bable Fish, etc.
 I treat any paper that I believe has been created with an online text translator as plagiarized.
 Students whose work I suspect has been created (in part or entirely) with an online translator will be
given a zero on the assignment and one chance to redo the work for a maximum grade of 65%.
 Parent/guardian contacted.
Students plagarizing from other students: two or more students turn in identical assignments
 Students are denied additional chance to complete the work.
 All students involved receive a zero on the assignment.
 Parent/guardian contacted.
Grading System
This course will follow the following grading scale:
100-90 = A
89-80 = B
79-70 = C
69-65 = D
64 and below = F
Terry High School uses the following categories and weight distributions:
Daily Grades (Participation and Homework): 25%
This category includes the daily warm-up activities, in-class activities, participation charts, and homework.
9-Week Tests: 25%
This cateogry includes four assessments, given during the last week of each marking period (approximately every 9
weeks). They are cumulative of the entire year.
Tests and Quizzes: 50%
This category includes vocabulary and grammar quizzes, speaking assessments, and chapter tests. You will have advance
notice of all tests and assessments.
Late Work
 Homework is always due the next time class meets, unless I specify otherwise. I almost always grade homework
on effort and completion, as homework is a way for you to practice your new language. Only quality work
turned in on time will receive full credit.
 Any homework assignment can be turned in late for half credit. 10/20 is much better for your grade than 0/20,
and completing homework helps your understanding of the French language. Projects are typically marked
down by 20%.
 If you forgot to complete a homework assignment, the best thing to do is to show me the NEXT day that you
have the assignment completed. Once 9-week and semester grades have been submitted, I will be unable to
make any changes to the gradebook for that particular grading period.
Make-up Work (Note: I am not responsible for reminding you that you have missing work)
Work missed while you were absent receives full credit as long as it is submitted in a timely manner (in general, you
have a day to make up work for every day you were absent). We will go over procedures to locate assignments missed
while you were absent. If you miss a test or quiz, you need to speak with me to arrange a convenient time to make up
the assessment. If you anticipate that you will be absent, please let me know a few days in advance so I can provide you
with make-up work before you leave.
