Year: 2012-2013
Room: G-711
Course Description:
The objective of this course is to increase the student’s understanding of European history from ancient
times to the present with the goal of having each student pass the AP Examination on Wednesday May 15,
2013. The areas of concentration include historical, political and economic history coupled with an intense
study of cultural and intellectual institutions and their development. This course is taught at the college
level. The major differences between a high school course and college history course are the amount
of reading, writing, and the focus. Most high school courses stress, “What happened?” intending to
provide enough background to ensure good citizenship. College courses stress “Why and how?”
things happen as well as the consequences of actions. This will be a fast paced course covering
approximately one chapter a week.
Text: The Western Heritage: Since 1300 (10 th Edition) by D. Kagan, S. Ozment, and F. Turner. We will
also be using supplemental sources for readings and primary sources.
Course Materials:
You MUST bring the following materials to class with you each day:
Euro History textbook
Pen (blue or black ONLY) and/or Pencil
200 page 8 ½ by 11 Spiral Notebook
Bellwork:
Upon entering the classroom, each student is expected to begin the bellwork assignment that will be on the
board. Points for bellwork will be given on a daily basis and may only be made up if an absence is
excused. It is YOUR responsibility to make up bellwork points. Students will keep a running bellwork log
that will be collected and graded on a bi-weekly basis. Each log is worth 30 points.
Grades:
Grades will be determined as follows:
100-90= A
89-80= B
79-70= C
69-60= D
59 and below= F
Grades are based on daily lessons, homework, bellwork, quizzes, essays, and exams.
Following are how the categories are weighted:
Essays (DBQ & FRQ) = 35%
Unit Exams = 35%
Homework & Quizzes = 20%
Classwork = 10%
Cheating and Plagiarism:
Please do not attempt to cheat. If a student is caught cheating they will receive a score of zero (0) for that
assignment, no matter the point value of the assignment. If a student willingly helps you to cheat, the same
will apply to them. Remember that I am here to help you. If you need help with an assignment DO NOT
HESITATE to seek my assistance.
Absences:
Every day matters! Per CDO policy, a student will be dropped from the class receiving NO credit on
the eighth absence (excused or unexcused). If a student has an excused absence, it is the responsibility of
the student to check the assignment book for any missed assignments. Assignments may NOT be made
up if the absence is UNEXCUSED. Each student has ONE day upon his or her return to complete
makeup work, including tests and/or quizzes. If the makeup work is not turned in at this time, the student
will receive a 0 for that (those) assignment(s). It is your responsibility to make arrangements to make
up a test or quiz during tutorial, or by appointment before or after school.
Tardiness:
Tardiness is a distraction and delays valuable class time. Students are expected to be seated and working
on bellwork when the bell rings. If a student is tardy to class, he/she will lose points for bellwork that day
and will not be allowed to make it up. Once 3 tardies occur lunch detention will be given.
Late Work Policy:
All homework will be collected during the first five minutes of class on the due date. All work handed in
after this will be late and given half credit. No work for the unit will be accepted after the unit exam has
been given. If you are absent, it is YOUR responsibility to find out what you missed and turn in the
makeup work on time. Check the APUSH daily notebook.
Electronics:
Students cannot participate in class if they are texting, playing electronic games, or listening to music on
MP3 players; therefore, NO electronics are allowed in class at any time. Over the years cell phones have
become an enormous distraction/problem in classes. The following quote is from the Parent/Student
Information Booklet: “All cell phones and other electronic devices must be turned off and placed in
the student’s backpack or purse while in a classroom. Schools and teachers may also set additional
rules and restrictions on the use of such devices.” I have become weary of being the “cell phone police”
so I will not be confiscating cell phones. Instead I will be assigning weekend homework (5 questions) each
time I see a cell phone. Questions will be assigned on Friday and will be due the following Monday and
will apply to all students in the class. Please be considerate to your fellow classmates and keep your
cell phones stowed away during class.
Review Sessions:
We will be having APEH Exam review sessions beginning at the end of March. These likely will occur
after school, and on occasional weekends. These review sessions are meant to help prepare for the APEH
Exam in May. The schedule will be set in March with your input. Please plan to attend as many as
possible.
I do not believe that expectations should be a one-way proposition, just as I expect you to come to class
prepared and ready to learn; you in turn, may expect that I will come to class prepared and ready to help
you succeed at learning.
Please check the following site weekly (at a minimum) for information concerning class:
