Vocabulary:
Delta – is a flat, fertile triangle formed by a river when it divides into many branches and drains into a
larger body of water
Cataract – a rocky place with rapids in a river
Hieroglyphics – a system of writing, used by the Ancient Egyptians, that consists of symbols and pictures
Pyramids – huge stone structures built as tombs
Pharaoh - name given to an Egyptian ruler
Unification – the joining of separate parts into one whole – In Egypt, King Menes, unified Upper and
Lower Egypt
Papyrus – a plant that grew along the Nile river and was used to make paper
Mummification – the process used to mummify (preserve) the bodies of the dead
Mastabas – the earliest tombs built for the pharaohs
Shadoof – piece of technology that was used by Egyptian farmers to get water from the Nile River to
their crops
Rosetta Stone – helped historians break the code for deciphering hieroglyphics. It had 3 languages on it
– Greek, Hieroglyphics, a later form of Egyptian writing
Social Pyramid – chart that showed the rank of the people in society
