ST ANDREW’S SOUTHGATE PRIMARY SCHOOL (CE)
April 2015
Dear Parents,
I hope you all had an enjoyable Easter break. We continue to follow a more creative
topic based approach involving more practical tasks and outdoor activities where
appropriate. This terms topic will be Ancient Egypt. We hope the information below
will help you to support your child’s learning.
English
We will be linking Literacy to our topic where possible and will be covering: Myths,
poetry on a theme, shape poems, diaries of Egyptian Pharaoh’s and archaeologist
Howard Carter, hieroglyphics, biographies, non-chronological report writing and
instructional writing to make a mummy. Spelling, punctuation, grammar and
handwriting will also be covered.
Maths
Daily lessons will include regular mental and oral work. Areas covered include: place
value, written methods for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division,
decimals (money), 3D & 2D shape, statistics and fractions. One lesson a week will be
a maths investigation/problem solving activity where children will be practising
their ability to use and apply what they know. Keep practising those times tables at
home!
Science
In Science will be covering magnets and the power of forces.
ICT
Using information we have researched on the internet, we will be developing our
presentation skills by producing animated PowerPoint presentations on the
discovery of King Tutankhamen’s tomb.
RE
With Mrs Wren on Wednesday afternoons we will be looking at the concept of
change whilst following a scheme of work titled ‘To Change the World’.
PSHE
In KS2 we will be using Miss Dorothy Dot.com materials with a focus on feelings.
Art/ D&T
Work will be linked to the topic of Ancient Egypt. The children will be learning
about hieroglyphics and using them to create sketches of their own Cartouche. We
will also be making our own Egyptian burial masks in preparation for our class
assembly on the 8th of May.
History
We will examine what life was like in Ancient Egypt, finding out about pyramids,
mummies and the River Nile. To support the learning in this area, a visit to the
British Museum has been arranged where the children will participate in their own
archaeological dig.
Modern Foreign Languages
Mr Arrugaeta will continue to teach the children Spanish on Thursdays.
PE
The focus will be on Tennis and Athletics. Our PE sessions are on Thursday and
Friday.
Music
Mrs Gerrard takes the class for recorders on a Tuesday afternoon. All other music
will be linked to school play.
Homework & Spellings
Spellings are sent out every Wednesday and are tested the following Friday.
Remember the process of look, cover, write, check.
Homework is also sent home on Wednesday. The homework is not due back until the
following Wednesday (at the latest). Homework usually consists of Numeracy and
Literacy work and is an extension of what we have been focussing on in class that
week.
Yours sincerely,
Mr Kimber
