Course Information
Course Description
Introduces understanding, speaking, reading, and writing skills and emphasizes basic Spanish
sentence structure. May include an additional hour of oral drill and practice per week.
Pre-requisites: college SPA 101 or equivalent (2 years high school Spanish)
Spanish 102 online is intended for students who have had recent experience with learning or using Spanish (at
least within the past 3 years.) Additionally, this format is not suited for students who have personal or career
goals that focus on developing strong conversational skills.
While seemingly more convenient, online learning is NOT EASIER. It is more difficult and requires much time
and personal discipline to stay on task.
For this online course: You must have the technical skills necessary to open, input data, save, and send
electronically documents that are in Microsoft WORD format. You must also understand and apply the online advice
given in About eLearning at http://www.tcc.edu/students/dtls Click on the STUDENTS & SUPPORT tabs to access

Blackboard and Course Communication
Students will be expected to check the course Blackboard Announcements & Discussion Board
as well as college email at least every 2-3 days.



For general messages to the whole class, I will post them in ANNOUNCEMENTS on the course
Blackboard. You must check your college email and the Blackboard site at least 3-4 times a week. Be sure
to click on the “all” tab in Announcements to ensure you have not missed anything.
Students’ emails must be sent to me from your college email address, especially if there are
attachments. All e-mails from students must include 102 and the specific purpose of the message in the
subject line or text of the e-mail. Please send all emails to me at: ko214@email.vccs.edu
Please allow me up to 48 hours Monday – Friday to reply to your emails (do not expect replies on
weekends.) Answers to most questions can be found much more quickly by reading this Course
Syllabus and the Blackboard site thoroughly than by e-mailing me and awaiting a response.

with any type of technical problems)
Course Policies
1. Attendance Policy: All students are expected to be present and on time at the scheduled
meeting for the Final Exam & Oral Interview. Instructors are not required to admit a student
who arrives late. A student who adds a class or registers after the first day of classes must
make up any missed assignments in a timely fashion.
In accordance with policies explained in the Student Handbook regarding unsatisfactory
attendance, any student who does not participate online, send assignments regularly,
and/or submit Tests will be withdrawn from the course by the instructor with a grade of
“W” at the mid-point of the course. Any student who does not attend the Final testing
session will receive a grade of “F” for the course.
2. Late Work/Make-up Exam Policy:
Late work – is not accepted. (except in cases of extreme and documented emergency)
Make-ups – are not given, except in cases of extreme and documented emergency. Any
make-ups will be at the discretion and convenience of the instructor and will be more
difficult than the original assignment or test.
Final Exam is on the Chesapeake Campus. Because there is a listening comprehension
component on the Final Exam and an Oral Interview with the Final, students are required to take
both on campus and under the direction of the Spanish instructor. Therefore, you have one
required meeting for testing purposes (see date below.) This is mandatory for all students
taking this course. If you cannot make this date, please select another class section to take that
has a better Final Exam date for your convenience. There can be no Make-up for the Final
Exam; grades are due within 24 hours after the Exam.
3. Statement on Online Behavior: TCC is committed to maintaining a social and physical
environment conducive to carrying out its education mission. Therefore, all members of the
TCC community are expected to demonstrate standards for civility and appropriate
language online.



Be moderate in speaking. Loud, obscene, argumentative, or threatening speech is
disruptive to teaching and learning and is offensive to others. It has no place in an
academic setting.
Resolve any disagreements in a positive, non-combative manner. Request the
assistance of college authorities if needed.
Show respect for the comfort of others in an educational setting by observing
acceptable standards for personal cleanliness and dress.

4. Electronic Devices Policy: Cell phones, pagers, and all other electronic devices are
prohibited from use during classroom Exams.
5. Disposition of Classes for Emergency Shutdown of the College:
In the event of an emergency shutdown of the college that would prevent the on
campus meeting for the Final Exam and Oral Interview, the president and her
executive staff may elect to conclude the term in session if eighty-five percent or
more of that term has been completed. If the term in session is concluded, faculty
shall compute final grades of students based on coursework completed at that point.
Grade Policy:
40%
Your final grade will be determined as follows:
CLASS PARTICIPATION:
You’ll be able to submit textbook practice and workbook/lab/video manual activities electronically through the
iLrn Learning Center by the dates indicated in the site’s Calendar. There will be 3 deadline dates per Capítulo
(=chapter,) approximately one deadline per week (every 4 days for 10- week Summer sessions.) You will be
allowed 3 attempts at all practice activities. Deadline dates within each Chapter are to keep you on track so you
don’t get behind in your work. Once behind, it is difficult to catch up.
Some of your practice is matching, multiple choice, and short answers. Within each Chapter, you will have at
least one paragraph Writing Assignment and at least one Oral Activity for which you will receive my personal
feedback. A couple of days after the last deadline to submit practice activities, you will take the chapter Examen
on the iLrn Learning Center. Late work will NOT be accepted.
Your chapter Participation grade will be based on the points you earn for activities you complete on time
out of all the points for assigned activities. Most activities are automatically graded so that you receive
immediate feedback; others require my grading and feedback. (More explanation on Blackboard.)
Be aware that my Teaching Notes with audio explanations are on the course Blackboard. Additional Practice
is available on the iLrn site, for example, Flash Cards for Vocabulary practice, Grammar Tutorials and
Videos, and Pre-Tests, Study Plans and Post-tests to prepare you for Exams. It is important for you to do ALL
the practice available. If you do not participate on iLrn or BB regularly, you will be withdrawn from the course.
25%:
TESTS:
At the end date of each Chapter, you will take an Examen on the iLrn Learning Center. You will have only one
attempt at the Examen; I will grade it and give part credit when appropriate. (1 Examen per Chapter for Chapters 5 – 9
= 4 Tests total at 6.25% each. Chapter 10 material will be included on the Final Exam.) NO Late work will be
accepted.
25%
FINAL EXAM:
The exam will be comprehensive; therefore it will cover Chapters 6 - 10. You will meet with me at the
Chesapeake campus on the date shown above in a room to be announced. This exam will be approximately
90 minutes long. (Arriving late will result in missing the listening portion and losing its respective points.)
There can be no make-ups for the Final Exam; grades are due within 24 hours.
10%
ORAL EXAM:
You will have 1 short (8-10 minute) individual oral interview with me on the same day we meet for the Final Exam, at
the Chesapeake campus. You’ll sign up for a 10-minute period between: 2:30 to 4:00 pm or 7:00 to 9:00 pm.
Tidewater Community College

Housed on the ASA intranet site
NOTE: Students will need to choose a time for the oral interview and sign up on the course Blackboard site about 2
weeks prior to the interview.
Final grades are made available to each student within the Student Information System (SIS)
now web delivered via MyTCC or SIS.
Based on the progression of the course, the grade
distribution for each assignment may change. However, if changes are made, I will notify
students in a timely manner and in writing.
The Grading Scale is a standard 10-point scale:
90-100 =A, 80-89 =B, 70-79 =C, 60-69 =D, below 60 =F.
Note: Grades below "C" do not transfer to other colleges/universities, and you should not go on to the next
level Spanish course with a grade less than “C”
Academic Policies
Students are responsible for being aware of the policies, procedures, and student
responsibilities contained within the current edition of the TCC Catalog and Student
Handbook. Students should familiarize themselves with the college's policies regarding
misconduct and inclement weather found in the Student Handbook.
Withdrawal Policy
Students who wish to withdraw without academic penalty should contact a counselor to
determine the appropriate procedure. Withdrawals through completion of 60 percent of a
session will result in a W grade. After 60 percent of a session is completed, a withdrawal will
result in a grade of F in a credit course or a grade of U in a developmental course, except under
mitigating circumstances that must be documented by the instructor and approved by the
academic dean. Dynamic session classes have unique refund and withdrawal dates. Contact a
campus Enrollment Services Office for more information, or visit
http://www.tcc.edu/students/calendar/academic/Dynamic.htm.
A student who drops after the last day to withdraw does not receive a "W." He/she receives an
"F," in which case there is both an academic and financial penalty. A student who withdraws by
the deadline faces a financial penalty, but not an academic penalty.

Academic Integrity
TCC will expect students to demonstrate personal and academic integrity, to be open to new
ideas, and to share in a community where individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures
help one another grow intellectually, socially, and personally.
TCC expects students to achieve, not just to get by. And while many caring and talented faculty
and staff are here to help, students must take responsibility for their own learning. Students
should strive for a high level of academic performance and to be responsible, contributing

citizens within the college and in outside communities. Above all, TCC wants students to
develop a love of learning that will last a lifetime, along with a life-long interest in maintaining
emotional and physical wellness.
Statement on Plagiarism and Academic Misconduct
The paragraphs below come from the Student Handbook and are TCC’s policy on plagiarism
and academic misconduct. Including the following statement verbatim:
Academic misconduct includes, but is not limited to, the following actions: cheating on an
examination or quiz—either giving or receiving information; copying information from another
person for graded assignments; using unauthorized materials during tests; collaboration during
examinations; buying, selling or stealing examinations; arranging a substitute for oneself during
examinations; substituting for another person, or arranging such a substitution; plagiarism—the
intentional or accidental presentation of another’s words or ideas; collusion with another person
or persons in submitting work for credit in class or lab, unless such collaboration is approved in
advance by the instructor.
Faculty members who have reliable evidence of academic misconduct will (1) investigate the
matter, and (2) review the facts of the matter and the proposed penalty with the appropriate
academic dean. They may then take one or more of the following actions:




Require the work to be accomplished again
Give no credit for the test, paper, or exercise
Assign a grade of F, U, or W for the course
Refer the matter to the campus Dean for Student Services or designee for possible
disciplinary sanction through the college’s disciplinary procedure
If the faculty member chooses to refer the matter to the campus Dean for Student Services or
designee for disposition, the Plenary Disciplinary Procedure shall be followed, and the student’s
dismissal from the college is a possibility.
Disability Services
Students who have documented, diagnosed disabilities, and who need special accommodations
for tests, etc., are advised to see the Disabilities Services staff in Student Services so that the
instructor may be notified of what accommodations are appropriate in each case. Requests for
accommodations should be made to the designated campus disability services counselor at
least 45 days before classes begin. Documentation must be provided to support the need for
accommodations.
For assistance with disabilities, contact the campus Disabilities Counselor/Provider or the
Coordinator of Learning Disabilities Services: call 822-1213, visit Student
Services/Development, or visit the Disability Services webpage at
http://www.tcc.edu/students/specialized/disabilityservices/index.htm
Emergency Procedures
In the event of a bomb threat, tornado, or fire, students and staff may be asked to evacuate the
building or move to a secure location within the building. Evacuation routes for movement to an
external location or to a shelter within the building are posted at the front of the room. Students
should review the maps and make sure that the exit route and assembly location for the building
