Saturday 15th February Sainsbury’s BA Birmingham Indoor
International at Birmingham NIA
Jonny Mellor finishes 7th in the high quality 3000m and runs a superb
pb of 7 46 73 , and smashes his club record but more importantly, gains
a World Indoor Championship Qualifying mark.
Sat 15th Feb - Katarina travelled to Holland [ feeling very much under the
weather ] to try and gain the World Pentathlon qualifying mark but although
she won the 60m H in 8 53, she pulled out of her attempt, feeling very much
below par. Kat still has the opportunity to compete in the World Indoor
Champs in Poland in three weeks time in the long jump. NB At the
Sainsburys televised Birmingham meeting the best international womens’
long jumper only jumped around 6m 45 [ some 30cm down on Kat’s
performance from Sheffield !! ]

8th & 9th Feb British Athletics Indoor Champs & World Trials
at Sheffield EIS
Katarina Johnson Thompson was the star of the weekend with her
tremendous double in the long and high jump
In the high jump Kat set a new Bitish High Jump record of
1m 96 and
then went on to record a tremendous long jump of 6m 75 – I will include
some of the images from the champs in the attachments, as well as also
hogging the front cover of AW . Both were personal bests and club records
– she had achieved a windy 6m 81, when she won the U23 European
Championships, but this was her best legal jump . She also gained £ 500
for the club for her performances.
NB The club now have both UK’s high jump records – with Steve Smith’s
2m 38 for the men and Kat’s 1m 96 –
both coached by Mike
Holmes !!
Jonny Mellor had a real head to head duel with AFD’s Andy Vernon as he
finished a fine second place in the 3000m in 7m 57 -08
Jamie Webb is growing in stature and is so close to dipping under 1m 50
for the 800m as he claimed 4th spot in the 800m in 1m 52 88 but gained an
excellent pb of 1m 50 38 in the heats.
Harry Harper finished 5th in the 1500m final with a time of 3m 51 49, after
running 3m 51 09 in his heat.
Olly Back ran 6m 87 in the 60m heats and gained a pb in the semi final with
6m 81
James Williams ran 6m 98 in his 60m heat
Alex Boyce ran a season’s best of 48 16 in his 400m heat
Sunday 9th Feb Liverpool & District Champs at Clarkes Gardens
Richard Burney & John McCole took the race by the scruff of the neck and
finished well clear of the field as Richard exerted his superior fitness on
the final lap to win from John and with James McNally, Ian Lawton ,
evergreen Mark Keeley and young Callum Grant they retained the L& D
trophy. Rachel Burns was first woman home followed by Charlotte Wilson
in 2nd place.

WORLD INDOOR CHAMPS – KATARINA’S LONG JUMP – FULL REPORT
The original plan was for Katarina to compete the in the Pentathlon in
the World Championships in Sopot, Poland, despite having earned the
right to compete in the long jump and high jump by winning the latter
events in the UK Trials (with the necessary qualifying standards).
Entry to the Pentathlon was by IAAF invitation not UK selection, and
limited to 8 places. When Katarina went to Holland in a bid to secure the
score for the invitation, she was too unwell to complete the five events.
So, it would have to be the long jump (with the high jump appearing to
be the stronger in world terms). It took 3 flights and 12 hours for Kat to
travel to Sopot with the GB team via London compared to 2 hours for
mum Tracey and coach Mike direct from Manchester. So it was handy
that Kat had two complete days to recover.
The GB team hotel (shared with the Russian team) was good but the
food pretty grim. Its not all glamour.
The qualifying round (Saturday) had 13 athletes which had to be
reduced to 8 for the final on the Sunday. On personal bests Katarina
ranked 10= out of the 13 entrants.
After qualifying jumps of 6.55, 6.55 & 6.60 Kat found herself in 6 th place
and safely through to the final along with fellow Brit and UK record
holder Shara Proctor.
Some technical shortcomings were identified in the qualifier that Mike
and Kat talked through overnight and resolved to improve in the final.
And so it proved, with a fantastic series:
6.68,6.62.
6.69, 6.81 pb, 6.69, 6.54,
Bear in mind, at the end of 2013 Kat’s best ever jump without wind was
6.56!
For several rounds Kat’s 6.81m stood up as the lead and after round
three, the jumping order was rearranged in ranking order with the leader
last to jump. So Katarina watched for round after round as everyone
took a pot shot at her 6.81. Eventually the French athlete went 6.85 but
that proved to be the only challenge. Kat had secured Silver!
Throughout the weekend 68 separate athletes jumped into that pit
(across all events) and Kat was the only one to pb…
Kat had nine jumps (including the qualifier) all on the board, with no
fouls. But in the course of the weekend Kat’s run up had to be moved
back two metres to achieve that.
Hitherto, in the history of LHAC, only Steve Smith has won medals in the
Olympics or World Champs; three bronzes. So silver is the best ever
Harriers medal at this level.
Of 35 GB athletes in the Champs, the UK took the 60m Gold (Kilty) but
that apart, Katarina was the top placed British athlete (and long jump is
not her event…!)
