OVERVIEW OF ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR 2006

advertisement
SAMPLE OVERVIEW OF ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR MAJOR AREAS OF STUDY IN 2008
PLEASE NOTE:
 These overviews are suggestions only and do not cover all areas. They are an attempt to help students and parents plan their way through a maze of
courses and subject prerequisites for tertiary study in 2008.

Students will need to continue and review their own research, over the next 12 months in order to make informed decisions.

It is essential that students:
* Attend Open days
* Review the VICTER 2008 (for University courses) or TAFE courses directory (for certificate/diploma courses)
* Familiarise themselves with the VTAC website
www.vtac.edu.au - Log onto courselink
* Read current University and TAFE guides that are available at open days or upon request from the Careers office.

Many tertiary courses have other special requirements, not just prerequisites in order to be eligible for entry eg, interviews, folios, testing or
additional application forms.

The 2004/05 ENTERS used in this publication are a guide only. Universities reserve the right to change the ENTER each year.
CHOOSING YOUR VCE / VCAL STUDY PROGRAM
Some hints to help students choose their VCE / VCAL program.
DO:
 Think about what interests you and what you like doing
 Undertake studies that you like, are good at and help keep your options open
 Log onto VTAC courselink to start researching the types of courses you are eligible to apply for
 Visit open days
 Talk with your careers teacher, classroom teachers and tutorial teachers
 Discuss your intentions with your parents/guardians
 Review and familiarise yourself with the resources available to you
DON’T:
Panic if you have no idea about the exact career or job you would like to do – REMEMBER to keep your options open
Choose subjects because your friends are doing them or because you may like the teacher
Choose subjects that you don’t want to do because you think it will help you get a good ENTER. (Equivalent National Tertiary Entrance Rank)
Your ENTER represents your performance across all of your studies.
Choose subjects based on the Scaling from the previous year – there is no point selecting a subject that you will struggle with simply because
it has traditionally been scaled up.

SAMPLE VCE PROGRAM FOR A STUDENT INTERESTED IN THE ARTS AREA
As a general rule : a student may be eligible to apply for an Arts degree with English as the only prerequisite for most institutions. However, they
should to be mindful of the ENTER and take into account the “middleband” suggestions made by the institution. NOTE: that the ENTERS in the
sample overviews suggest that although English may be the only prerequisite, a student needs to be an ‘above average’ achiever and committed to
their studies to gain the required ENTER.

TAFE COURSES INCLUDING TRADE PRE APPRENTICESHIPS: Tafe courses are a great way to start you career.
Developed with the needs of industry and business in mind, TAFE courses provide current information on all the skills you
will need at work. In addition, TAFE courses offer pathways and links between qualifications and provide flexibility and
recognition when combining vocational training and academic study. You can begin your studies at TAFE, obtain credit for
the work you have done and then apply for university admission
TAFE QUALIFICATIONS: TAFE has 4 certificate levels.
 Certificate I and II – requires completion of year 10
 Certificate III level – generally require completion of year 11
 Certificate IV level – requires completion of year 12
 TAFE has 2 Diploma levels
 Diploma and Advanced Diploma – both require completion of year 12 or mature age entry.
PREREQUISITES: Most TAFE courses do not publish prerequisites and Enters. However, it is recommended that students
retain a pass in English and Maths at the appropriate level to maximise their chances of gaining a place in their preferred
TAFE pathway. Many certificate I – III levels necessitate students complete an aptitude test and interview prior to being
offered a place.
HOW DO I APPLY FOR A TAFE COURSE? There are 2 methods of applying, depending upon the entry level.
 Directly to the TAFE for Certificate I, II and III levels – you should contact each TAFE for details about applying.
 Via the VTAC system for Certificate IV and above.
TAFE PATHWAYS: There are many study areas offered at TAFE – Including, automotive agriculture, animal studies,
Building and planning, bricklaying, carpentry and joinery, boat building, beauty, hairdressing, business administration
and sales, information technology, engineering and related studies, health and community welfare, hospitality and
tourism and security. For a complete listing refer to the TAFE Course Directory 2006.
