Job Announcement DISCUSSION LEADERS 2015 Summer Bridge Program Program Description: Summer Bridge serves a diverse and global community of entering undergraduates in a comprehensive six-week academic residential program. It introduces scholars to the structure and rigor of the research university, provides them with opportunities to foster meaningful academic and social connections with peers, staff, and faculty, and challenges them to take ownership of their academic journeys. Scholars enroll in two credit bearing courses, in addition to a seminar on Personal Wellness, and are each assigned an academic counselor and resident assistant to ensure successful transition to Cal. Bridge has grown 300% within the past three years. The 2014 cohort spoke 31 languages, came from 35 counties in California, represented 6 states, and hailed from 13 countries. Additionally, 77% of the 376 Bridge scholars were Pell grant and/or Dream Act eligible and 71% were the first in their families to attend college. The program is managed on behalf of the University by the Student Learning Center. Campus partners from over 60 departments collaborate closely in planning and delivering the program each summer, including the Athletic Study Center, the Educational Opportunity Program, the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, and Residential Programs. Discussion Leaders are needed for the following courses: ESPM 50 AC, Ethnic Studies 10 AC, and Geography 50 AC Responsibilities: Plan and facilitate weekly discussion sections for assigned course(s). Work in concert with course instructional team. Confer regularly with course instructor(s), hold office hours, monitor student progress, grade student work, attend weekly staff meetings, and maintain student attendance records. As needed, refer students to appropriate Summer Bridge staff. Qualifications: Substantial knowledge of the discipline for which one is applying; significant experience teaching at the undergraduate level (preferably 2+ semesters); success working with students, staff, and faculty from diverse ethnic, cultural, educational and linguistic backgrounds; and excellent communication skills. Preference is given to current UC Berkeley students. Salary: $20 - $26/hour, depending on experience. 20 hours per week.
