Employment is on a semester basis; possibility of re-hire is contingent upon satisfactory performance and SLC programmatic needs. Tutors are paid for their attendance at all required Orientations and Training meetings. Note: Students may not be employed by the University more than 50% time during the fall or spring semester in any combination of titles. Students may work up to 100% time during the summer (from the end of spring semester to the beginning of the fall semester) and during the winter break. Tutoring for Credit and Auditors/Service Opportunities: The SLC offers opportunities for students to explore current issues and theoretical frameworks in education while developing practical teaching skills and making a valuable contribution to the UCB student community. Students accepted into SLC Tutoring Courses, whether enrolled for credit or participating non-credit, all participate in weekly seminars which introduce students to educational theory and pedagogy, explore current issues in the field and provide structured means for students to reflect upon and analyze their SLC tutoring or teaching experience. The format and number of hours of direct work with students varies according to the number of units taken (3 hrs/unit), and is established by agreement with the Program Coordinator at the time of admission into the course. Those wishing to participate as Field Studies students without receiving credit participate fully in all aspects and requirements of the course. The Other Voices Program is a part of the Student Learning Center Writing program and is responsible for coordinating Other Voices: Multicultural Literary Perspectives course every spring in partnership with the Dept. of English. Two undergraduate student coordinators, and a number of undergraduate discussion leaders work with the program each year. 1) General Information: The Other Voices course takes place each spring and is organized by SLC Writing Program staff and the team of undergraduate Other Voices student discussion leaders. The Other Voices course includes a series of weekly lectures and presentations over the course of the semester given by distinguished faculty and artists from the campus, and the larger community. In addition to attending these weekly lectures, Other Voices students attend a weekly discussion section. O.V. Discussion Leaders receive Fall and Spring ongoing training to prepare and support them in leading the discussion sections, and in organizing and maintaining the course. 2) What are the Discussion Leaders’ responsibilities? Discussion Leaders commit to work with the Other Voices program for the duration of an academic year. Fall semester is spent training for work with the English 98/Other Voices course in spring, as well as planning the course itself; the Other Voices course is taught in the spring. Spring Semester Responsibilities (Approximately 6 hours/week): Attend weekly training or discussion leaders; complete all training assignments and activities. Attend all of the Other Voices lectures and meetings of discussion sections in the spring (Mondays and Wednesdays 12-1:00pm). Read all assigned reading for the Other Voices course. Facilitate student discussions about multicultural literature and issues, design creative and engaging activities to enhance their understanding and perspectives about issues, and help them in improving their writing skills. Schedule and keep office hours weekly. Keep records of student attendance and course work. Constructively respond to student papers in accordance with the goals and objectives of the class, and return student papers promptly. Meet weekly with DL partner to coordinate plans for section. Complete weekly time sheets recording hours worked. Communicate with student coordinators and staff coordinator on a regular basis, and immediately if emergencies arise. Communicate with student coordinators and staff coordinator if a student is failing the class or seems to be having any unusual difficulty. U.C. Berkeley, Chavez Student Center l.k., 8/15/06 • http://slc.berkeley.edu • (510) 642-7332 Student Learning Center Write a satisfactory 4-page final paper if enrolled for 97/197 credit. 2 units of 97/197 credit are available in Spring. Berkeley, Chavez Student Center l.k., 8/15/06 • http://slc.berkeley.edu • (510) 642-7332 Student Learning Center 3) What are the additional responsibilities of the Student Coordinators? In addition to the responsibilities described above, two Student Coordinators take a leadership role within the group of Discussion Leaders. For example, student coordinators may occasionally facilitate group meetings, represent the course in meetings with faculty and staff, actively engage in outreach to promote the course, and interview prospective discussion leaders along with the staff coordinator. The Student Coordinators also assist the staff coordinator with the day-to-day administration of the Other Voices program. Student coordinators work for three hours per week of paid time for these additional duties. Student Coordinators may still enroll in Ed.97/197 for their training and work as Discussion Leaders. 4) As noted above, Other Voices Discussion Leaders receive academic credit for their planning and training in the Fall and Spring semesters. Discussion leaders may enroll in Education 97/197 (Field Studies) courses for 1-4 units. As part of this course, a series of readings must be completed, as well as a final paper. Additional units may be earned by completing additional projects or assuming additional responsibilities. 5) How can I find out more about the course or the program?
