The Myth that Sex is Only Physical George Ross – Senior Pastor April 21-22, 2012 1. Points to Review Are you who you’re “looking for” is looking for? Are you trying to FIND or trying to BECOME the right person? What childish/selfish behavior are you leaving behind? 2. Questions to Ask Why are break-ups so hard to get over? Why is rape more difficult to recover from than assault? Why is there typically a pattern of absent fathers with men with sexual secrets? Why are people’s deepest regrets usually sexual in nature? 3. Scriptures to Know Genesis 2:24,25 (the 2 become 1) Hebrews 13:4 (the marriage bed is to be undefiled) Ephesians 5:3 (not a hint) 1 Thessalonians 4:3-5 (our holiness is God’s will) 1 Corinthians 6:15-20 (uniting / fleeing / a temple / you’re bought) 4. Realities to Face Sex is divine by design. Sex is not just physical. Sex is fragile. Exclusivity fuels romance. We’ve all sinned and fallen short of God’s glory. ~Romans 3:23 We’re saved by God’s grace through our faith. ~ Ephesians 2:8 Sermon Questions The Myth that Sex is Only Physical April 21-22, 2012 1. The physical is spiritual. Read 1 Corinthians 6:15-20. Paul explains that our body is a temple of God’s Holy Spirit, which is why we should flee from sexual immorality. Our physical experiences in marriage are an act of worship to God. What phrase or command in these passages grabbed your attention and why? 2. The grace to move forward. Read 1 Thessalonians 4:3-6. God has blessed us with the gift of sex in marriage. But, God’s goal above all the gifts that He gives is that we would be holy. ‘Sanctified’ means to be made holy, including the way we use the gift of sex. Whether we have a past or are fighting temptation, God is working to make us holy through our current situations. How are you protecting yourself from these temptations? 3. Not a hint but a pursuit. Read Ephesians 5:1-2. We become frustrated when we only focus on not having ‘a hint of sexual immorality’ instead of being ‘imitators of God.’ We pursue God as we flee sexual immorality. What roadblocks have you experienced as you pursue God over temptation?
