Our mission is to strengthen the Mount Holyoke community by cultivating an active association of New York metropolitan area alumnae who are connected to, informed of, and actively involved in, the life and work of the College and the Alumnae Association. The Club aims to foster meaningful relationships among all alumnae through both social and professional activities. 1 President’s Report Jennifer Durst ‘95 President I am proud to present this report on another busy and successful year of the Mt. Holyoke Club of New York City. The board organized a variety of events for alums to enjoy, from cultural events to events focused on health and wellness, to social events. These events would not have happened without the hard work of the board, which is described in this report. The highlight of the year was the 75th Vespers in New York City held this past December at St. Bartholomew’s Church on Park Avenue. This Mount Holyoke tradition was held in memory of Wendy Wasserstein ’71. We were fortunate to include the original cast members of Uncommon Women and Others as honorary chairs, and to enjoy the presence of Mt. Holyoke College President, Joanna Creighton, Chair of the Board of Trustees, Leslie Anne Miller '73, and President of the Alumnae Association, Mary Graham Davis '65. Our fellow alums turned out en masse that night to fill the church and help us raise over $30,000 for club programming and scholarships. We would especially like to thank our Patron Chairs, Vice Chairs and Patron supporters for their support. They are listed on page XX. I would also like to extend an extra special thanks to Anne Marie McGonnigal ’85, her entire team of alumnae volunteers, and the Mt. Holyoke College music department faculty and students for organizing a very special evening for everyone. Besides organizing programs for our members and other alums to enjoy, the Mt. Holyoke Club of New York City raises money for the Alumnae Scholars program. This past year we were able to offer two $5000 scholarships to two students from the New York City area. Grace June Kim ’07 majored in French and psychology. Cherie Hannouche ’07 studied art history and music. If they have returned to New York City, we hope to see them at club events. I would like to be sure to thank all of the alums who made gifts to the Alumnae Scholars program. I must thank one alumnae in particular, Arax Simsarian ’43 for her substantial contribution to this program and her commitment to the New York City club. In addition to the Alumnae Scholars program to which the club has contributed each year, the board learned of an endowed scholarship fund set up in 1949 by the Mt. Holyoke Club of New York City. This fund has been generating a $2,500 scholarship that has been awarded to a student each year. Thanks to the wonderful success of Vespers this past year and the generosity of alums, the board decided to take the extraordinary step of contributing $50,000 to the endowed scholarship fund. By the end of this next fiscal year, ending June 30, 2008, the earnings from this fund will be close to $5,000 and will be awarded to a Mt. Holyoke student from New York City. We are very proud to be able to make this contribution and to ensure that a Mt. Holyoke student will receive additional financial support each year. In closing, I would like to thank the entire board of the Mt. Holyoke Club of New York City for its commitment to the mission of the club. Furthermore, I want to express our sincere gratitude to those alums who chose to become club members and others who supported our programming. Lastly, we must thank the staff and faculty of the college and the Alumnae Association who helped to make this a successful year. 2 Board of Directors July 2006 – January 2007 President Vice President Vice President – Programs Treasurer Secretary Jennifer Durst ‘95 Linda Ing Phelps ‘86 Anne Marie McGonnigal ‘85 Maren Boot ‘88 Raluca Dalea ‘01 February 2007 – June 2007 President Vice President Vice President – Programs Treasurer Secretary Jennifer Durst ‘95 Linda Ing Phelps ‘86 Lynette Rizzo ‘96 Maren Boot ‘88 Tara Mia Paone ‘81 July 2006 – June 2007 Membership Julie Holley ’87 (co-chair) Akua Soadwa ’03 (co-chair) Programs Peggy Andrews ‘90 Mary Hidajat ‘99 Mary Griffin Metz ‘78 Meg O’Rourke '89 Marguerite Saint-Preux ‘02 Susan Saxe ‘77 Sarah Sladen ‘03 Vespers Anne-Marie McGonnigal ‘85 Communications Amanda Davis ‘00 (chair) Alanna Barton ‘05 Heather Waterman ’96 (website) Seven Sisters Mabel Ntiru ’04 (chair) Young Alumnae Dana Barta ’04 (co-chair) Natalya Marusich ’04 (co-chair) Tamara Dews ‘06 Honorary Members Lily Klebanoff Blake ’64 Joan Shapiro Green ’66 Alumnae Admissions Representative Johanna Fausto ’98 3 Treasurer’s Report Fiscal Year 7/1/06 to 6/30/07 Maren Boot ‘88 Treasurer Overview Based on the very successful Vespers concert in 2006 and the generosity of our members, we are able to contribute $50,000 towards a scholarship endowment fund at the school. This means we will have a scholarship each year in the name of The Mount Holyoke College Club of New York City. This is a terrific achievement and the Club thanks all who supported Vespers and the Alumnae Scholars fund so generously over the past years. Income This year, the Club received income of approximately $73,000. These funds came from Vespers, membership, other events and interest income. This past Vespers netted over $30,000. Membership contributions totaled approximately $13,000. Contributions ranged from a basic membership of $40 to amounts in excess of the patron level membership of $150. Alumnae are welcome to make contributions in any amount above the membership price of $40. All amounts over $40 are put into the Alumnae Scholarship fund. Other income included more than $3800 from our interest bearing bank account. Revenues from various club programs other than Vespers were in excess of $4500. Expenses Fees from the Club’s programs (excluding Vespers), typically charged to cover program expenses such as catering and room rental, totaled approximately $4,800. Vespers costs this year were $21,500. The Club will donate 50K towards the scholar’s endowment fund. The club will donate an additional $2,500 towards an Alumnae scholar. Expenses for the Club totaled approximately $4,200. The Club’s operating expenses are primarily related to cost of communications, cost of mailbox rental, voicemail box etc., annual meeting costs and board meetings. We started the year with about $55,000 in our account. We expect to close the year close to $45,000 after we write the check for the Alumnae Fund Scholarship Endowment. 4 Programs Lynette Rizzo ‘96 Vice President, Programs Back-to-School Brunch – October 1, 2006 On a beautiful fall day the club kicked off the year once again with this much-loved annual club event. Abigail Hitchcock welcomed us back to her Greenwich Village restaurant, Camaje. We enjoyed a scrumptious brunch. Fellow alumna, Sheryl McCarthy ’69 talked about her career as a journalist. At the end of the event, several alums won great raffle prizes including a beautiful bag made and donated by Adrienne Chandler ’88. Nancy Gustafson at the New York Philharmonic - November 30, 2006 Club members watched Nancy Gustafson ’78 as she debuted with the New York Philharmonic at Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center and then enjoyed a private talk with her afterwards. 75th Vespers in New York City - December 8, 2006 We celebrated the 75th Christmas Vespers Concert in New York City, which was held in memory of Wendy Wasserstein ‘71. Vice Chair and Patron ticket holders attended a special pre-concert reception at St. Bartholomew's Church with MHC President Joanne V. Creighton, Chair of the Board of Trustees Leslie Anne Miller '73, Alumnae Association President Mary Graham Davis '65, and members of the original cast of Wendy Wasserstein’s Uncommon Women and Others. Proceeds from the concert supported programming of the New York City club and the club's Alumnae Scholar Fund. Wine Tasting – January 24, 2007 The staff at Moore Brothers Wine Company led attendees through a broad variety of wines and offered advice on how to match wine to specific foods and occasions. Moore Brothers Wine Company is the largest retailer of carefully selected, artisan, hand-made, estate bottled wines in America. A Night at the Theater – March 22, 2007 Stomp, the award-winning show now at the Orpheum Theatre, provides a unique combination of percussion, movement and visual comedy. Following the performance, cast members stayed for a brief Q&A discussion with alums. Color in Gemstones: Nature vs. Nurture – March 28, 2007 As part of the Lyon Lecture Series, Professor Darby Dyar discussed geological origins of economically-significant gemstones, the current gemstone market, and an overview of common treatments used to enhance and modify color. Implications for wise purchase of colored gemstones was also discussed. This event was held at the Harvard Club of New York. 5 Free Beauty Event at Dermalogica – April 26, 2007 Dermalogica hosted a free skin-care class that focused on skin aging. Attendees were offered customized "face mapping” and complimentary gift bags complete with a sampling of Dermalogica products. Pilates Class – April 28, 2007 Celebrity trainer Kristin McGee taught a Pilates mat class using magic circles, props and straps. 365 Days/365 Plays – May 6, 2007 365 Days/365 Plays started in November 2002 when MHC alum Suzan-Lori Parks committed to writing a play a day for the next 365 days. From November 2006 to November 2007, more than 60 selected theater companies - curated by The Public Theater and the 365 Days/365 Plays National Festival - are performing these brief, brilliant plays in venues all over NYC. As part of the First Sunday Series at the Public, Club members had an opportunity to see a full month of plays performed at one time on one stage. Girls Inc Volunteer Event – May 30, 2007 Girls Inc of New York City inspires girls to be smart, strong and bold. In recognition of the success of Girls Inc participants continuing on to college, Girls Inc of NYC holds a "college shower" each spring--a party where girls are given many personal items they will need to prepare for college. MHC alum and Girls Inc of New York City board member, Bente Frantz hosted a wrapping party for volunteers to help wrap gifts that were donated for this year's college shower and at the same time learn about volunteer opportunities with Girls Inc of NYC. 6 The Mount Holyoke Club of New York gratefully acknowledges its Special Guests and Supporters of the 75th Vespers Concert in New York City Special Guests Joanne V. Dues help support scholarships, communication, networking opportunities, and a wide array of programs and events throughout the year. Our membership base is even stronger than last year with 268 members, up from last year’s 243. With this 10.3 % increase, the Club enjoyed a more diverse membership roster. The breakdown of membership for 2006-2007 was: Regular: 47% Young Alumnae: 22.4% Club Patrons: 12.7% Club Supporters: 9.7% Honorary Club Members: 8.2% 9 We are grateful to all the alumnae who supported the Club during the year, especially those who contributed as Patrons and Supporters. Late last year, we identified a need for stronger communication and coordination between each alumnae club. In November of 2006, Mount Holyoke initiated and facilitated a meeting with Seven Sisters representatives and club presidents during which we brainstormed ideas for stronger communication going forward. One result of that meeting was the creation of a Seven Sisters Yahoo Group list serve that is currently used to advertise events open to all Seven Sisters alumnae in the NYC area. The Seven Sisters hosted several events in 2007, including three informal networking gatherings with an average of 10 to 15 alumnae in attendance. These informal gatherings gave us the chance to socialize and network in a relaxed atmosphere. In addition to these Seven Sisters hosted events, we made a strong effort to cross promote events with our respective Alma Mater clubs in the city through our regular email blasts and the Seven Sisters Yahoo Group. Although scheduling difficulties kept us from hosting more comprehensive Seven Sisters hosted events in 2007, our priority for the upcoming year will be to ensure stronger coordination and planning so that more Seven Sisters hosted events appear on the calendar. 11 Young Alumnae Report Dana Barta ‘04 Natalya Marusich ‘04 Young Alumnae Co-Chairs The year kicked off with the Summer Intern Reception, which was hosted at JPMorgan Chase & Co. by Prerna Kapur ’04 and Dana Barta ’04. Current MHC students who were participating in summer internship programs throughout New York City, their sponsors, newly admitted freshman students and alumnae gathered to mingle and share their experiences with others. The event was very well attended with roughly 40 people were present. On Friday, November 10th, Dana Barta ‘04 put together a Young Alumnae Bowling Nite, based on a suggestion from some of young alumnae in a Yahoo group online poll done in mid August). There were 12 people eager to bowl - half young alumnae, and half friends of young alumnae. With two lanes for three hours, the YAs bonded in the East Village until the early morning. On Saturday, November 5th, Natalya Marusich ’04 put together a Some Like it Hot Yoga Workshop. There were seven young alumnae present. The three hour workshop included a discussion on women’s health and personal issues as well as yoga exercises. The workshop ended with a healthy fruit platter and drinks. Everybody enjoyed the workshop and the introduction to yoga. Afterwards some of the participants expressed interest in participating again in a similar workshop. There was a push from the creator of the studio to continue sessions with the seven girls originally present, but that has never been realized due to the lack of interest in the proposed format. There was interest to continue learning about Hot Yoga and its positive effects on the body on everybody’s part and the group felt that the time was well spent. Four young alumnae made their way through the piles of snow to SoHo on Friday, March 16th, 2007 in order to see "The Sublet Experiment" - a play performed in various apartments around New York City. The play was very thoughtful and fun, two hours of cultural fiesta. Through word of mouth, a number of MHC alums became interested in the production and attended the show throughout the month of March. The Central Park Scavenger Hunt put together by Tamara Dews ’06 was canceled due to low turnout. It will be rescheduled in the fall as a Mountain Day. The most challenging task this year was keeping the monthly Happy Hours afloat. While the young alumnae’s email inbox (mhcnycya@yahoo.com) is flooded with emails of young alums eager to join the MHCNYCYA Yahoo list (mhcnycya@yahoogroups.com) especially to find out about the happy hours, the turnout has been quite low. The location and turnout of the happy hours, excluding the organizer, are listed below: Date Location Host Turnout June 5th, 2006 Under the Volcano Rada Angelova ‘05 N.A. May 4th, 2007 Ribot Natalya Marusich ‘04 5 June 6th, 2007 Katwalk Bar & Lounge Seven Sisters Event 2 * There were cases in which the alumnae did not find the organizer or the group. These unfortunate events made us reconsider ways of organizing the events. More effort was put into making the group more aware of the location of the group as well as different ways of getting in touch once at the location. The Young Alumnae Yahoo Group – MHCNYCYA Group (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mhcnycya/) has been up and running since November 2006 thanks to Dana Barta. The group currently has 111 members. It is used as a communications forum. The board makes announcements, posts events and photos, and keeps the group up to date, while the group members use it as a discussion forum posting items about City events, recruiting, moving sales, rides to our alma mater, etc. The pool feature is used to survey the group’s opinion about events as the young alumnae co-chairs are interested in serving the group’s needs and interests. 13 Communications Amanda Davis ‘00 Communications Chair Communications continues to use the MyEmma program to design and send our email announcements and newsletters, as well as compiling our mailing lists. The club currently has about 1,100 emails in our database, including both paid members and other alumnae who are interested in the club. We send newsletters or other email announcements to our mailing list approximately twice a month. MyEmma also allows the club to track the success of our online communications by viewing the number of emails opened, new members who join after being forwarded one of our emails, and the most popular links in each of our email communications. As newsletter editor this year, Alanna Barton took on the task of compiling event information, alumnae announcements and other club news for our regular online newsletters, MHC-NYC News. Alanna also assisted with the design and layout for the club’s newsletter using MyEmma. Heather Waterman, our long-time webmaster, continued to keep our website up-to-date with information about events, club officers, and the all-important Paypal links allowing members to buy tickets online to many of our events. 14 Alumnae Admissions Representative [AAR] Johanna Fausto ’98, New York City Wide AAR 2000-2007 ADMISSIONS STATISTICS FOR NYC SENIORS INQUIRIES APPLICANTS % Yld ACCEPTS % Yld MATRICULANTS % Yld 2007 2006 2005 2004 2003 2002 2001 2000 1139 813 1063 1081 1333 1593 965 743 193 145 124 131 159 162 165 108 17% 18% 12% 12% 12% 10% 17% 15% 103 76 64 69 87 89 84 65 53% 52% 52% 53% 55% 55% 51% 60% 25 24 20 15 26 33 21 23 24% 32% 31% 22% 30% 37% 25% 35% Fall 2006 Highlights AARs again attended college fairs at local public and private schools that admissions staff could not cover. Pre-Vespers Reception at the Inter-Continental Hotel followed by Vespers (December 8, 2006) –Twenty people attended a pre-Vespers reception at the InterContinental Hotel. There were 4 students, 10 alumnae and one admissions staff (Vivian Nabeta) in attendance. The reception was informal with an opportunity to mingle in the beginning and a Q&A after 45 minutes. Alumnae introduced themselves and shared their MHC experiences. This is the 3rd pre-Vespers Reception for prospective students. This event was the smallest compared to the first one held in 2003 with 25 attendees and the second one in 2005 with 42 attendees. The event was hosted by the NYC AARs and sponsored by the Admissions Office. Spring 2007 Highlight Accepted Student Reception – Hosts: Audrey Sokoloff & Tim Hosking P’07 (Wednesday, April 19) Instead of an alumna host this year, Leah Brown’s (’07) parents, Audrey Sokoloff and Tim Hosking served as hosts. A last minute decision brought Leah down to NYC so she too was able to attend the reception. Twelve accepted students and their families attended while 15 alumnae were present. Catarina Costa-Wofford, the admissions staff member in charge of the NYC area also attended. The event was a success because all constituents of the admissions process were there: alumnae, a current student, parents, and an admissions representative! I would recommend trying to get this representation in all subsequent receptions. After 45 minutes of mingling, alumnae introduced themselves, our hosts described how happy they were with MHC and Leah’s experience despite their Ivy League educations, and Catarina Costa-Wofford encouraged students to attend the upcoming MHC Preview weekend. Students received a yellow MHC pennant with a sphinx on it as gifts.
