World Language Department at Northgate High “The study of languages and cultures is for all students.” Goals for the WL Department: a. To develop high levels of proficiency in several of the world's languages and cultures. b. To move beyond traditional approaches in which students learn about languages and cultures. c. To provide opportunities for students to learn languages for real-world purposes in culturally-appropriate ways. KNOWS AND DOS A. Levels 1 & 2 (formulaic language): KNOWS AND DOS Students in Spanish I & II, French I & II, German I & II and Mandarin: 1. Engage in conversations School-Wide Goals 2. Write notes, lists, poems, postcards, and short letters. Speak efficiently and effectively Write efficiently and create original work. 3. communicate effectively with some hesitation and errors, which do not hinder comprehension Speak and listen effectively and clearly Levels 1 & 2 at Northgate High are the equivalent to Stage I in the 2009 “World Languages Content Standards for California Public School”. Based on those, the students can perform the knows/do in the following content: 1.0 Students acquire information, recognize distinctive viewpoints, and further their knowledge of other disciplines. 1.1 Students address discrete elements of daily life, including: a.
