Passport and Visa information
Every visitor to Russia must have a valid passport and entrance visa.
Preliminary Program of the Workshop:
Field trip on July 18, 2003
Note: The departure of the bus for excursion will be at 9:00 am from hotel “Akademicheskaya”
where the guests will stay. We kindly request the participants of excursion to be in time.
The field trip will be to the "Gorky" natural-historical reserve-special forestry
"Gorky" Reserve is a unique natural site in Central Russia, situated 10 km south-east from Moscow.
Landscapes are typical for the forest zone within the Russian Plain and their peculiarities are caused by
the contact of five landscapes that belong to three physiographic regions. Many landscape complexes
can serve as environment-forming, resources-protecting and model sites in the Moscow suburban
region. Participants of the field trip will get acquainted with the long period of man-nature interactions
resulted in specific territorial pattern of nature management. Rather limited combination of natural and
anthropogenic landscape components, their attractiveness, and economic suitability created cultural
and historic image of national Russian landscape formed by culture of generations.
The reserve is also characterized by relics of old economic activities such as well seen old plough and
cultural horizons, remnants of territorial economic structure, as well as by man-made landscape
complexes. This allows to reconstruct activities of the inhabitants at various historic stages,
anthropogenic changes in landscapes as results of different types of nature management.
More than 150 historical, cultural and archaeological monuments characterizing all main stages and
types of nature management within the region are situated in the reserve with the area of 1665 hectares.
The most ancient settlements (Korobovskoje and Sjanovskoje settlements, etc.) are of Iron Age (1-st
millennium BC). There are 23 groups of kurgan graves (the largest contains 40 kurgans) of 10-13
centuries, and 15 settlements of 11-17 centuries. Stone quarries (Sjanovskije caves) are very interesting
monuments of 14-19 centuries. They can tell a lot not only on geologic structure of the region but also
on some peculiarities of the history of nature management there. Landscape parks of the "Gorky" and
"Pronino" estates of 18-19 centuries are typical for Russian estate culture. Their graceful palaces,
gardens and parks with straight and intricate lanes, whimsical pavilions and ponds are of extraordinary
beauty and aesthetic value.
