Regents chemistry

RULES AND PROCEDURES
Chemistry may prove to be one of the most important subjects you will ever learn in your
lifetime. As you can see today, the world is driven by science and technology. Chemistry is one of the
oldest sciences (alchemy to be exact) from which all other sciences were derived from. You have
already taken earth science and living environment and now chemistry will help to tie everything
together along with physics that you will take next year. As long as you keep up with the work, ask
questions, hand in labs and homework on time, you will find success and appreciation for chemistry.
CLASSROOM RULES:
 All students are to be in class on time, if you are late or absent you are responsible to make
up work that is missed.
 You must have with you a binder, a pen/pencil, a reference table and a calculator every day.
 If you are absent on the day of an exam, you should be ready to take it when you return.
 Once you walk into class you may not leave unless the “do now” has been completed and
homework has been checked.
 Please refrain from using or having out any electronic devices. If repeatedly told to do so
your cell phone will be confiscated. If repeatedly confiscated, then it will be sent to the
main office where a parent or guardian must come to claim it.
SUPPLIES:
1. A binder with loose leaf paper with sections entitled: NOTES, HANDOUTS, HOMEWORK,
TESTS/QUIZZES
2. A folder to go in your binder
3. A scientific calculator (graphing is acceptable but not on the day of the regents)
4. Reference tables for Physical Setting/CHEMISTRY (which will be handed to you)
TEXTBOOK:
Students will be given New York Prentice Hall Chemistry and Barron’s Lets Review Chemistry. There
will be reading and homework assignments in this book. You are encouraged to bring it home and use
it!
LABORATORY POLICY:
 Students must demonstrate 1200 minutes of laboratory work in order to sit for the Regents
exam in June.
 There are about 10-12 lab reports per marking period. They are graded out of 100. A 65 is
considered passing.
 Ten points will be deducted for each day a lab is late. Lab reports are due on Wednesdays.
 All questions and sections must be completed; otherwise they will be handed back, marked as
incomplete and graded as late.
 Formal lab write ups will also be required. Refer to lab report format and grading rubric.
GUARDIAN CONTACT:
 Guardian contact is made via phone, email, and letters mailed home. Lab delinquencies, missed
homework, failing quizzes and tests, inappropriate behavior, cheating/copying, are concerning
and contact with a guardian will made right away.
HOMEWORK:
Homework will be given almost every night. Homework will be listed on your weekly schedule.
Homework is checked or collected at the beginning of class for completeness and correctness. No late
homework is accepted; however two will get dropped per quarter. If there is no homework, you should
review your notes.
GRADING POLICY:
Your quarterly grade in this class will be based on the following 4 things:
