Common Telephone Scams Targeting Seniors, Part 2: Jury Duty Scam – The caller will claim to be an officer of the court and say there’s a warrant for the arrest of the victim for failing to report for jury duty. The scammer will also claim that there is a fine for failing to show up for jury duty, and that unless the fine is paid immediately, the police will be sent to the victim’s home to make an arrest. The scammer will request that the “Jury Duty Warrant” be paid with a Green Dot Card Money Card or Western Union MoneyGram. The scam has been around for years and surfaces periodically in New York. In one recent case, the calls were traced to a Georgia prison. IRS Scam – The caller will claim to be an agent or police officer from the Internal Revenue Service calling about a past due tax balance that is owed. The caller will tell the victim that unless the debt is paid immediately, a team of officers will come to the victim’s home that day to arrest the victim. The scammer will also request that the “IRS Tax Warrant” be paid with a Green Dot Card Money Card or Western Union MoneyGram. These scammers often use caller ID spoofing so that the victim’s caller ID box says “Internal Revenue Service” or displays the phone number of the Internal Revenue Service. Contributed By Our Members Food for Thought By Barbara Mindel Sometimes, foods in the cabinet are good for other than eating: Pam cooking spray will dry nail polish, remove grease or paint from your hands and unstick bicycle chains. Mayonaise will condition your hair, on a Q-Tip it will clean house plant leaves, and also it kills lice. Brewed Lipton Tea puts shine in your hair. Peanut Butter will get scratches out of CDs once wiped off with a coffee filter paper and also will remove labels off glassware when rubbed on it. Morton Salt will absorb/get off wine stains. Cornstarch is good for athletes foot. A 20-minute soak in large bottle of Club Soda mixed with a cup of Milk of Magnesia will preserve a newspaper clipping for years if you soak it in the mixture and then let it dry. Some 7-UP in a vase will keep flowers fresh longer. Karo Syrup removes grass stains. Coca Cola will not only removes grease stains in general but also from the driveway if left on it overnight, plus it will also take corrosion from car batteries. At all times, it’s good to learn about the freshness of food we buy. So here’s a tip about bread: the twist ties and the plastic clips on loaves are color-coded for which day the fresh breads are delivered. Know the colors for the day it represents and you can select the freshest! Blue = Monday Green =Tuesday Red = Thursday White = Friday Yellow = Saturday * no deliveries Wednesday or Sunday. Note that colors go alphabetically for easier remembering! And in case you never heard it, there’s the ole saying, “Bread may be the staff of life but life should never be a continual loaf.” Happy shopping! Roberta “Bobbie” Jubert By Barbara Mindel Bobbie was born, raised, and educated through high school and business college in Quebec before marrying an American and moving from Montreal to the United States. Her marriage was performed by a special friend she had made, Father Rene Turcotte. Life’s turns are fascinating: at the last election for a new pope Monsignor Rene Turcotte was in the running. As Bobbie stated, “To have known this man was a miracle. Even at his young age he was special. Imagine: I could have been married by a (future) pope!” The newly married couple moved to Buffalo but given the recession in ’53, there were no jobs so they relocated to Poughkeepsie where her husband went to work at Hudson River State Hospital. Bobbie raised their two sons, Kevin and Marc and later worked at AT&T as a manager. When it broke up, she took a buy-out and went to work for the Department of Transportation Federal Credit Union, advancing to VP of Operations before retiring. Retirement for Bobbie only meant from the workforce. She’s a community person and for years has plunged into a myriad of volunteer efforts. It is no small wonder that in 1998 the YWCA honored her as Woman of the Year on behalf of her dedication to serve where skills and help were needed. Examples: Poughkeepsie Business & Professional Women’s Club, Hyde Park AARP, Home Bureau/Loving Hands, Certified Long Term Ombudsman, Certified Literacy Connections Instructor, Bardavon Opera House usher, RSVP, Battered Women phone corp, YWCA, Bulls & Bears Investment Group, St. Francis front desk, etc. She is particularly proud of having received a letter of commendation from the VP of NY Telephone for her efforts as a team member providing services to the returning Iran hostages who landed in Newburgh, that effort requiring over 250 phone lines and 30 radio-TV circuits, plus requested dial tone, all in record time. “I was proud of our government and what we, as a team, were able to contribute to this moment in history.” As if that weren’t enough, Bobbie is artistically creative: beaded jewelry, some of which she sold in local stores, bedspreads for which she won 1st prize one year at the DC Fair, quilting, belonging to the former JCC Knitters group. After such an extensive activism - and as she stated, “as I enter the winter of my life” - belonging to one of the Town’s former senior clubs for 11 years and now the new Senior Center “is a place of refuge for me and all seniors who no longer can or want to volunteer in community.” She is ever thankful for the opportunities to have traveled to Alaska, Bermuda, Italy, England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, Hawaii as well as throughout our country. And these days she is enjoying the social rapport with everyone at the Center and playing Mahjongg, Hand in Foot, and Quiddler. Bobbie’s always been high on life & she’s appreciative of those who help to still make it possible. In her words, “I think I can speak for all of the seniors in saying thanks, thanks, thanks to Tom and his staff!” Chuckles by Barbara Mindel When my grandson asked me how old I was, I teasingly replied, “I’m not sure.” “Look in your underwear, Grandma,” he advised. “Mine says I’m four.” * A grandfather was telling his little granddaughter what his own childhood was like. “We used to swing from a tire; it hung from a tree in our front yard. We rode our pony. We picked wild raspberries in the woods.” The little boy was wide-eyed, taking this all in. At last he said, “I sure wish I’d gotten to know you sooner.” * “Give me a sentence about a public servant,” said the teacher. The small boy wrote, “The fireman came down the ladder pregnant.” The teacher took the lad aside to correct him. “Don’t you know what pregnant means?” “Sure,” said the young boy confidently. “It means carrying a child.” * A grandmother was surprised by her 7-year-old grandson one morning. He had made her coffee. She drank what was the worst cup of it in her life. When she got to the bottom, there were three of those little green Army men in the cup. She said, “Honey, what are these army men doing in my coffee?” “Grandma,” said the child, “It says on TV that the best part of waking up is soldiers in your cup!” * Five-year-old Mark couldn’t wait to tell his friend, who had come over to visit, about the movie he and his parents had watched on TV, “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.” The scenes with the submarine and the giant octopus had kept him wide-eyed. In the middle of telling his friend about it, Mark’s father interrupted and asked his son, “What caused the submarine to sink?” Mark just stared at his father in disbelief before he answered, “D-a-d! It was the 20,000 leaks.” Dates in History September 29, 1936 - Radio used for first time for a presidential campaign September 30, 1988 - IBM announces shipment of 3 millionth PS/2 personal computer October 1, 1957 - "First appearance of ""In God We Trust"" on U.S. paper currency.
