Course Information
This course uses myitlab, a Web Based training tool for Office, and Microsoft Office 2010 Professional for
all assignments and exams.
Course Description
Overview of computer technology, concepts, terminology, and the role of computers in society. Discussion
of social and ethical issues related to computers. Use of word processing, spreadsheet, database, and
presentation software using Microsoft Office 2010 and myitlab a web based training tool for Office.
Includes programming and use of the Internet. Exploration of relevant emerging technologies.
Prerequisites: None.
Course Competencies













Identify terminology and uses of technology in business and society including limitations.
Describe how technology is used in the departments of business and in various career paths.
Identify common hardware components of computer systems and describe their uses.
Identify different types of software and their uses.
Use word processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation software.
Describe common uses of networks.
Use the Internet to communicate, collaborate, and retrieve information.
Create macros and understand the basics of visual basic for applications (VBA).
Determine when technology is useful and select the appropriate tool(s) and technology resources to
address a variety of tasks and problems.
Describe the steps in planning and implementing technology solutions.
Identify positive social and ethical behaviors when using technology and the consequences of
misuse.
Describe Website technology
Explore system security and privacy issues.

Required Technologies

Myitlab – A web based simulation where you will take multiple choice quizzes and exams and
walk through skill based training lessons using Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access 2010
Internet Explorer if using a Personal Compter (PC) or Safari if you are using a MAC

For Grader Projects you must have Microsoft Office 2010 Professional. (Word, Excel
PowerPoint, Access – 2010). You will need to do all of your Grader Projects using a Personal
Computer. You can not use a MAC for grader projects

Homework may be completed in the library or B301. In order to use B301 you must have a student
ID.

Attendance, Participation, and Withdrawal Policies



Attendance for regular classes will be taken daily. E-mail me if you cannot attend class. You are
expected to make up all missed assignments for that day.
Attendance for an online or hybrid section: You must check into the course on a weekly basis. You
are responsible for any course announcements, postings, emails, and changes. Check the course
announcements, course schedule, and email for posted changes.
The instructor reserves the right to withdraw a student who has been inactive within the course for 2
or more weeks. Students withdrawn for inactivity may be reinstated only with the approval of the
instructor. A grade of W will be assigned.
