6th GRADE LITERATURE GRADE BREAKDOWN 40% QUIZZES/BOOK REPORT 60% HOMEWORK/750 PAGES QUIZZES About every other week, we will have a reading comprehension quiz based on the assigned reading. We will also have vocabulary quizzes based on words taken for the books we are reading. After we finish a book, we will have a cumulative test comprised of plot summaries, vocabulary and other literary components such as theme and point of view. HOMEWORK Homework will be assigned reading and usually filling out a corresponding chapter summary sheet for each chapter. We will also fill out vocabulary sheets and study guides for each book we finish. Homework will be assigned each class period. BOOKREPORTS We will complete one book report each quarter. We will complete the book reports in class and they will be based on one of the books we have read in class that quarter. DATES: The Phantom Tollbooth Call of the Wild Tom Sawyer The Diary of Anne Frank The Outsiders OCTOBER NOVEMBER JANUARY MARCH MAY PARTICIPATION In order to work on reading comprehension and pronunciation, we will spend about a half hour a week reading in class, either as an entire class or broken down into small reading rotation groups. It is essential that students follow along when it is not their turn to read and to participate in class discussion. St. Michael’s Episcopal Day School 6th Grade Literature – 750 Pages Requirement In Reading/Literature class this year, the students will be reading five (5) books as a class, and they will be writing a book report on each of these books. The books we will read together are, in order, as follows: The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton The Call of the Wild by Jack London The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain The Diary of Anne Frank from Anne Frank The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster The students received their copy of The Outsiders during the first week of school. They will receive their copy of the appropriate book after we finish working with the previous novel. They will return it after they have written their book report. Including the reading for their book reports, each student is required to read a total of 750 pages per quarter. At the end of the quarter, they will turn in a list of the books that they have read which total at least 750 pages. The book report books are included in this page requirement.
