Abstract Revision 9.0 of the draft document intended to become TIA-968-B was prepared and separately submitted for review by the TR-41.9.1 working group at their August 2008 meeting in Halifax. This draft incorporated all changes approved by TR-41.9.1 at their 24 June 2008 teleconference. All changes were summarized in a revision and change log attached to the draft. This document records several notes that the editor would like to bring to the working group’s attention. This revision incorporates all changes approved by the TR-41.9 committee at their interim-meeting teleconference on 24 June 2008. These changes are detailed in the revision and change log attached at the end of the draft ‘968-B. While preparing this draft, I noticed several things that I would like to bring to the committee’s attention or would like to ask the WG members for their assistance. Review of these items may generate subsequent changes. Where these items are more than editorial changes, WG review and approval may be necessary. Issues and changes for WG review: 1. Figure and table numbering is not yet corrected. Are we done adding/deleting figures and tables yet? 2. No problems encountered with changes & additions from 24 June teleconference, but a review of these changes in the new draft might be helpful to make sure that I did everything as the WG intended. For reference, my “to do” list from the teleconference included the following items: a) Review & implement WG edits made directly into Draft Rev 8.6 during teleconference, and contained in the two e-mail messages of 26 June from Trone B. Delete note at bottom of table B.1. b) Shorten titles for subclauses 4.4.1 & 4.4.2, but capture contents of current long titles within sentence or paragraph that follows the titles. c) Replace or add as appropriate from Lawler’s contribution ‘-06-004 (VDSL2 PSD and transverse balance) to subclauses 5.3.8.1.4 and 5.3.8.2. Selectively replace “illustrates” with “shows” (simpler verbiage). Add “RBW” to abbreviations and definitions. d) Replace current table B.1 with Lawler’s new table from ‘-06-005MR1 (cross-reference to TIA-968-A, modified by Roger during the teleconference). e) Replace all current material in subclause 5.1.11 with material in Trone’s contribution -06006L (OPS interface requirements). Retain titles in low-level headings except where redundant. TIA-968-B Rev 9.0 Notes Page 2 Telecommunications Industry Association TR41.9.1-08-08-003 f) Replace current Scope with all material in -007 (revised scope section). Simplify third paragraph starting “Except for…” and make other editorial changes as needed. g) Do a final spell-check. Review all figures and tables to make sure nothing breaks across a page break. Update tables of contents, figures, and tables. Other issues, comments, and thoughts not otherwise captured somewhere: (This material for WG information only – No action or approval is sought.) 1) “Voiceband” or “voice band” (one word or two)? Or is “voice-band” better? The one-word form was frequently used in the original draft (which MS-Word says is a misspelling), but the two-word form appeared in many subsequent additions that were cut-andpasted into the draft. Consistency argues for choosing one form and using it exclusively throughout the document. The words “voice” and “band” appear in almost any dictionary, so the two-word form is clearly correct. But before making any changes, I did some checking: The 1992 TIA Style Manual says nothing about this. Webster’s New World dictionary does not show “voiceband” (one word). (By comparison, it does list a hyphenated “voice-over” and the two-word “voice print.”) IEEE Authoritative Dictionary 7th edition includes definitions for “voice band” (two words) and “voice-band channel” (hyphenated), but not “voiceband.” No listing of “voiceband” as one word was found in Dictionary.com, the Wiley Interscience acronym finder, Industry Canada’s Publishing Glossary, IEEE Computer Society keywords list or style guide, or the IEEE Editorial Style Manual. However, the term “voiceband” seems widely used, because a simple Google search of this term as one word brings up many examples of its use. Since our established practice has been to only use words that are defined in a dictionary or other authoritative reference, with particular attention to Webster’s and the IEEE dictionaries, then the use of “voice band” as two words seems most appropriate. Consequently, I did a global search-and-replace in the ‘968-B draft to ensure that the twoword form is used consistently. # # # TIA-968-B Rev 9.0 Notes Page 3
