Prior to this position, he worked in the public and private sector including a period in public relations in Spain. His research involves two main areas: Management Development (leadership and management development, change management, middle management learning, strategic change through staff development process and CP) and International Student Learning (sense-making and identity formation, critical thinking, learning strategies distance learning and distance taugh). His professional interests involve supporting middle and senior managers in education and the public sector. His current research interests include the international student experience, critical narrative and globalisation. Philip Vickerman Philip is Director of Academic Delivery and Professor of Inclusive Education and Learning in the Faculty of Education, Community and Leisure. He is responsible for student enhancement activity and also leads on staff development and international/collaborative activities within the Faculty. He is a member of various Faculty and cross University groups and committees and is a member of Academic Board. Philip is a National Teaching Fellow, awarded by the Higher Education Academy in 2005 and has led a number of pedagogic projects funded by external agencies. He has a particular interest in inclusive education and learning within Higher Education. Philip also teaches on the university postgraduate certificate in learning and teaching in higher education and is actively involved in the mentoring of staff new to teaching. Philip’s research focuses upon the training of PE teachers to include children with SEN. He is also interested in research that focuses upon accessing pupils voice in relation to children with SEN’s experiences of PE and sport. Barbara Pavey Barbara is lecturer in SEN/Inclusion and Dyslexia in higher education and Academic Consultant training dyslexia specialists in the North of England. Her current affiliation is the Institute of Education at the University of London. Jan Murphy Jan began teaching Chemistry and Science in 1980, and after teaching for 19 years at a variety of different schools in Liverpool, moved from Head of Science to work as a Senior Lecturer in Science Education at Liverpool John Moores, and has undertaken a variety of managerial roles over the last 14 years. Interests include transition from Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 3. More recently, this interest in supporting transition has been focused on a collaborative action research with city secondary schools and this area of interest forms the basis for a professional doctorate. Jan holdsa BSc (Hons), Chemistry, University of Manchester's Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST), MEd, University of Liverpool. Jan’s current role is Director of Teacher Education and Professional Learning. Rick Tynan Rick worked for nearly 30 years in three 11-18 mixed comprehensive schools on Merseyside. As well as teaching Science and Biology he has been Head of Biology, Head of Science and a Senior Teacher. Rick also has examining experience of Biology, Chemistry and Science at GCSE Level and Biology Practical Coursework Moderation at GCE A-Level. Since 2006 Rick has worked at LJMU on a variety of undergraduate and post graduate courses to do with Science Education and the award of Qualified Teacher Status. He works with practising teachers to help develop mentoring skills and enhance subject knowledge and understanding. His research interests include the assessment of teaching competencies and standards, subject knowledge enhancement for teaching, biology practical and fieldwork in school science and technology enhanced learning. In a second existence Rick also holds the degree of Member of the Magic Circle. RobertBryn-Jones Following graduation Bryn began his teaching in Derby. After twelve years as Head of Chemistry and Head of Sixth Form, Bryn completed an Advanced Diploma in Education Management, and also holds an MA (Open), a BSc (Hons) in Chemistry, PGCE. In 1990 Bryn was appointed as a Senior Teacher (later Assistant Headteacher) to a large urban high school on Merseyside. Since 2005 Brynhas offered his experience and support in initial teacher education across a range of routes. Initially, with Liverpool John Moores University, as an associate tutor, and since 2008 as a Lecturer in Education (Chemistry). This has been combined with a role as a specialist support tutor with the Open University PGCE and as an external QA advisor for a Graduate Teacher Programme. Ken Clays Ken is a Physics specialist and has 30 years’ experience of teaching science in the North West. Immediately prior to joining LJMU, Ken was working in a large sixth form college in Salford. As well as teaching on courses leading to traditional qualifications such as GCSEs, Ken has also taught on vocational courses such as GNVQ and BTEC at levels 2 and 3. In 1998 Ken was involved in the pilot of the Salters Horners Advanced Physics course (SHAP), a project course developed by the University of York Science Education Group for the Curriculum 2000 qualifications revision. This course was unique in being the first context led Physics course for any school based qualification. Experience on SHAP led Ken into working with Edexcel first as an examiner, and then as a senior examiner on Advanced level Physics courses. Ken worked on the development of the Edexcel 'A' level Physics specification for the curriculum revision of 2008, and produced sample assessment materials for the AS course. He has contributed to an 'A' level study guide (currently a bestseller amongst Edexcel A2 Physics students!), and is a member of the team working on the development of the new Edexcel 'A' level specification for 2015. Andrea Mallaburn Since September 1995 Andrea has taught in Secondary Schools. The first six years were spent teaching in East London, where Andreagained promotion to KS4 co-ordinator of Science. After seven years of teaching Andrea spent her first year as a Head of Science in another multilingual school in North London. Andrea relocated to Liverpool in September 2002 to undertake a Head of Science role in a North Liverpool school. In her role as teacher governor in the school she was involved in the strategic management of the school and the recruitment of key staff, including the recently appointed new head teacher. Since September 2010, Andrea has been seconded to LJMU to work on their Science programmes. In September 2012 Andrea become a permanent member of the Science Education team. For the last 2 years she has been nominated and shortlisted for the outstanding teacher award by the Liverpool Student Union. As a lifelong learner herself, Andrea has a vested interest in continuous professional development, she holds a BSc (Hons) – Chemistry, PhD Chemistry (The clinical biochemistry of aluminium), CChem MRSC, PGCE,NPQH,PG Cert (Mentoring and Coaching), FHEA (Fellow of the Higher Education Academy). Eleni Chatzichristou Eleni holds a PhD and MSc in Astronomy and a BSc in Physics. She is currently the Academic Dean of City Unity College and Research Associate of the National Observatory of Athens. She has several years of academic and research experience, having worked at Yale University, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Hubble Space Telescope Science Institute, European Southern Observatory, Dutch Space Research Organization, Paris Observatory, and Leiden University. Eleni has received several distinctions and awards and has won international grants to fund her research activities, including 58 scientific publications in international journals and conference proceedings, more than 200 science dissemination articles, and one book. She is actively involved in the development and coordination of projects involving new technologies and novel methodologies in education. Manos Apostolakis Manos is a physicist. He holds a PhD in Distance Learning and Science Education and a Master in Science Teaching from the University of Athens. He is currently a mentor – supervisor of post-graduate students’ Master thesis in the Greek Open University and in the Open University of Cyprus. He is also a high-school principal in the Greek private educational institution “Ellinogermaniki Agogi”. He is involved in pedagogical research in the R&D Dept of “Ellinogermaniki Agogi” in the fields of Distance Education and ICT in Education. He has 15 years of experience as a trainer (both in distance education and conventional in-service training programs) in the fields of ICT use in education and science teaching. He is also a writer of science textbooks. Grigoris Zygouras Grigoris holds a degree in Electric Engineering and a BSc in Physics. He also holds a degree in Pedagogical studies. Grigoris is a Physics specialist and he is currently teaching at the General Lyceum of Melissia, in Athens. Chrysanthi Solomonidou Chrysanthi is a teacher of the Greek language. She holds a BSc from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Department of Philosophy, Pedagogy and Psychology. Between 2005-2008 she attended the courses of the postgraduate program Theory, Practice and Assessment of Educational Work with specialisation in Educational Design and Teaching and obtained the MA degree with distinction. Already during her studies, Chrysanthi became familiar with children having special educational needs and developed a great personal interest in this field. Therefore, she began attending seminars on learning difficulties, dyslexia, autism and about the appropriate teaching methodologies. Since 2009 she have been primarily working as a private tutor supporting students with mild mental retardation, learning disabilities, dyslexia and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), at various levels of education ranging from primary school to high school. Being an active teacher and having the will to always improve my teaching methodology she also participatew in the Educartoon Group (www.educartoon.gr).
