“ Demonstration and Assessment of the Statistics Online Computational
Resource (SOCR)”
Αbstract
Many modern approaches to enhancing liberal and science college education significantly rely on the availability and
utilization of multimedia, networking, web, interactive, computational and visualization technologies. This recent
paradigm shift to technology-based instruction is driven in part by the rapid advancement of technology, the
proliferation of the Internet in all aspects of life and the intrinsic demand for the integration of information technology
with classical pedagogical instruments.
The NSF-funded (National Science Foundation) Statistics Online Computational Resource (SOCR) provides a number
of interactive tools to enhance instruction in various undergraduate and graduate courses in probability and statistics.
SOCR tools and resources include a repository of interactive applets, computational and graphing tools. The wide
range capabilities of SOCR will be presented through demonstrations of distributions, experiments, and games. The
effectiveness of these computational and simulation applets had been assessed through a semi-experimental study in
three courses at the UCLA Department of Statistics. And the findings show promising results of the partnership
between instruction and technology.
