Information for Employers
NUS Vacation Internship Programme (VIP)
The NUS Vacation Internship Programme is intended to provide students with opportunities to gain work experience
during the vacation periods in May and December every year. Students volunteer to participate in this internship
programme.
Employers Benefits
Access to an excellent pool of talents and potential hires for your organisations
 Cost effective recruitment pipeline for graduate recruitment
 Inject new perspectives and value-add to your team of full time staff
Employers’ Submission
Employers should ensure scope of internship is meaningful and serves to enhance the student's educational
experience and career development. Learning objectives should be structured into the internship programme. The
company should appoint a reporting supervisor who will be responsible for the learning outcomes of the intern and to
ensure that the established objectives are met. To ensure a good learning outcome for students, internship requests
will be screened through by NUS Career Centre. Approved requests will be published.
If job scope is too administrative in nature or can be filled by a temporary worker, we seek your assistance to hire
under Work Study Scheme (WSS). VIP students are paid an allowance (CPF exempted), whereas WSS students are
paid on an hourly rate as per temporary staff.
VIP Period
The period of training will be during the vacation breaks each year.
For Academic Year 2013/2014, the VIP periods are:
 Semester 1: 9 December 2013 – 10 January 2014 (i.e. 5 weeks)
 Semester 2: 12 May 2014 – 1 August 2014 (i.e. 12 weeks)
Note: NUS would only recognise the above official periods under the Vacation Internship Programme. Any extension
beyond the official period would be students’ own personal arrangement with the organisation, and is subjected to
approval by the respective faculties of the students. Employers should request from students a written approval shown
by the faculty to let them do the internship beyond the official school vacation period.
In the event that the hire is an international student, he/she would also have to abide by ICA’s regulation of not more than
16 working hours/week outside the official vacation period listed. Information can also be found from the following link
http://www.ica.gov.sg/page.aspx?pageid=325&secid=182 under “Work privileges for IHL students”.
