What is the state bird? What is the state flower? What is the state tree? Section 2: NJ History- The back of your box 1. Choose a historical site in New Jersey to research from the site below: http://www.kidsguide.com/historyframe.html Answer the following questions: Where is your site located? What is its historical significance? What other interesting or important facts can you tell about this landmark? 2. The Lenni Lenape Tribes were an important part of New Jersey’s history. Research the Lenni Lenape Indians using the following site: http://www.bigorrin.org/lenape_kids.htm What does the word “Lenape” mean? Where did the Lenape live? What types of homes did they live in? What types of clothing did they wear? Include one other interesting fact about the Lenape tribe. Section 3: Government (Side of your box) As we know, New Jersey’s government has three branches: executive, judicial and legislative. 1. Go to www.state.nj.us/hangout_nj/government_executi ve.html Who is the chief of the executive branch? Where is the governor’s office located? What are some of the jobs of the governor? 2. Next, go to www.state.nj.us/hangout_nj/government_legislat ive.html How many members are there in the New Jersey senate? How many members are there in the General Assembly? What is the main job of the legislature? How many times of year do they meet? Where do they meet? 3. Now, go to www.state.nj.us/hangout_nj/government_judicial .html What is the role of the judicial branch? How long do the judges serve? What is the highest court in the judiciary branch? 4. Last, take a look at the NJ Statehouse: www.state.nj.us/hangout_nj/government_stateh ouse.html Where is the statehouse located? How long has it been in use? Scroll down to the fifth paragraph and explain what happened to the statehouse in 1885. Section 4: Your Choice: Think about what you have learned and read about our state so far. Revisit some of the interesting sites and use the other side of your cereal box for fun facts. Now it is time to create your cereal box!
