SPRING 2015 NEWSLETTER Dear Parents/Guardians, Take a look at what your child is learning throughout the spring months! Please notice the Common Core Standards and the NJ Core Content Standards. We are busy bees! Third Grade Language Arts Literacy Common Core Standard Activities CC W.3.7: Conduct short research projects that build knowledge about a topic. CC W.3.1: Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons. CC SL. 3.1: Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussion (one-onone, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 3 topics and texts, building on other’s ideas and expressing their own clearly. CC Sl.3.4: Report on a topic or text, tell a story, or recount an experience with appropriate facts and relevant descriptive details, speaking clearly at and understandable pace. Writing research reports on influential individuals Presenting research reports at 3rd grade writing celebration Writing opinion pieces on a given topic Reading buddies/groups to complete comprehension tasks using a given text Third Grade Mathematics Common Core Standard Activities CC 3.MD.2: Measure and estimate liquid volumes and masses of objects using standard units of grams, kilograms, and liters. Add, subtract, multiply or divide to solve one-step word problems involving masses or volumes that are given in the same units, e.g., by using drawings to represent the problem. CC 3.MD.3: Draw a scaled picture graph and a scaled bar graph to represent a data set with several categories. Solve one-and two-step “how many more” and “how many less” problems using information presented in scaled bar graphs. CC 3.MD.4: Generate measurements data by measuring lengths using rulers marked with halves and fourths of an inch. Show the data by making a line plot, where the horizontal scale is marked off in whole numbers, halves, or quarters. CC 3.MD.3.G.1: Understand that shapes in different categories many share attributes and that the shared attributes can define a larger category. NJ CC 5.4.4.G.3: Trace a path a drop of water might follow through the water cycle. NJ CC 5.2.2.A.2: Identify common objects as solids, liquids, or gas NJ CC 5.2.4.B.1: Predict and explain what happens when a common substance, such as shortening or candle wax is heated to melting then cooled to a solid. Create a diagram of the water cycle Research three types of clouds Sort objects into categories (solids, liquids, gasses) Look at objects and tell whether they can have a chemical change. Third Grade Social Studies Standard Activities NJ CC 6.1.4.D.1: Determine the impact of European colonization on Native American population, including the Lenni Lenape of New Jersey. NJ CC 6.1.4.D.10: Describe how the influence of Native American groups, including the Lenni Lenape culture, is manifested in different regions of New Jersey. NJ CC 6.1.4.B.5: Describe how human interaction impacts the environment in New Jersey and the United States. NJ CC 6.1.4.B.10: Identify the major cities in New Jersey and United States and explain how maps, globes, and tools can be used to understand cultural differences.
