Baseline - Back boundary line at each end of the court, parallel to the net.
Carry - An illegal tactic, also called a sling or a throw, in which the shuttle is caught and
held on the racquet and then slung during the execution of a stroke.
Center Line - Line perpendicular to the net that separates the left and right service
courts.
Clear - A shot hit deep to the opponents back boundary line. The high clear is a
defensive shot, while the flatter attacking clear is used offensively.
Drive - A fast and low shot that makes a horizontal flight over the net.
Drop - A shot hit softly and with finesse to fall rapidly and close to the net on the
opponent's side.
Fault - A violation of the playing rules, either in serving, receiving, or during play.
Kill - fast downward shot that cannot be returned; a "put away".
Match - A series of games to determine a winner.
Net Shot - Shot hit from the forecourt that just clears the net and then falls rapidly.
Racquet (Racket) - Instrument used by the player to hit the shuttlecock.
Rally - Exchange of shots while the shuttle is in play.
Serve (Service) - Stroke used to put the shuttlecock into play at the start of a rally.
Shuttlecock (Shuttle) - Official name for the object that the players must hit. Composed
of 16 goose feathers attached to a cork base covered with leather. Synthetic shuttles are
also used by some.
Sideline - Side boundary line running lengthwise on each court.
Smash - Hard-hit overhead shot that force the shuttle sharply downward.
Wood Shot - Shot that results when the frame of the racket hits the base of the shuttle.

Court: singles - 44 feet long x 17 feet wide, doubles - 44 feet long x 20 feet wide
Net height - 5 feet
Shuttlecocks - Also known as birdies or birds.
Rackets - Made of lightweight material like wood, plastic or metal.
Object of the game

The object of the game is to hit the shuttlecock back and forth over a net without
permitting it to hit the floor in bounds on your side of the net.
General rules and terms
1. A player may not touch the net with a racket or their body during play.
2. A birdie may not come to rest or be carried on the racket.
3. A birdie may hit the net on its way across during play and the rally can continue.
4. A player may not reach over the net to hit the shuttlecock.
5. Some types of shots are the clear, drop shot, smash and drive.
Serving
1. The serve must travel diagonally (cross court) to be good. (In PE we will not worry
with this).
2. A serve that touches the net and lands in the proper court is called a let serve and is reserved. A serve that is totally missed may be tried again.
3. The racket must make contact with the birdie below the waist on a serve.
4. The server and receiver shall stand within their respective service courts until the serve
is made.
5. Points may only be scored when serving (In PE we will use RALLY scoring).
6. All lines are considered in bounds.
