NET SHOTS!
Badminton Net Play
• This requires more finness than power
• A simple flick of the wrist can send your
opponent scrambling
– Think of your NET KILL
• Changing the angle of your racket face
• Goal is to deceive your opponent, mask
your true intention
What Are My Options?
• Here are the shot options for when
you approach the net:

Net Shot
Hairpin Net Shot
Net Kill
Net Lift
NET SHOTS
• Played from your
net area to your
opponents net area
• Play with forehand
and backhand
• Angle shuttle to
stretch width of
court
• Force opponent to
hit poor return/lift
• Goal is to have
shuttle “tumble”
tight to the net,
into opponents
frontcourt
NET SHOT Cont’d
• Grip depends on how you are hitting
the shuttle (FH or BH side of body)
• Keep racket in front of your body
• Lunge forward with your racket leg
• Reach out to strike shuttle high
NET SHOT Cont’d
• Racket head
parallel to court
• Let shuttle
“bounce” off
racket face
• Push off lunge leg
to return to your
base
HAIRPIN DROP SHOT
• Similar mechanics
to NET DROP
• Played very low to
court, use wrist to
lift racket slightly
to increase
lift/tumble
NET KILLS
• Poor return from
opponent
• Opportunity to
move into net, put
shuttle away
• DOWN, DOWN,
DOWN
• Get to the net
quickly
• Choke up, shorten
stroke, more wrist
mvm’t
• Direction over
velocity
• Respect the net!
NET LIFT
• This is an underhand clear played
from a position tight to the net
• Used to push your opponent deep to
their own back boundary line
• You can play it at different
trajectories depending on your need
NET LIFT Cont’d
• You can make this look like a Net Shot on your
approach
• Just before contact, unlock your wrist and really
snap your wrist through the shot, sending it deep
and over your opponents head
• Becomes a great shot if you can disguise it well
• After striking shuttle, push off your lunge leg,
get back to your base position.
