Badminton Net Play • This requires more finness than power • A simple flick of the wrist can send your opponent scrambling – Think of your NET KILL • Changing the angle of your racket face • Goal is to deceive your opponent, mask your true intention What Are My Options? • Here are the shot options for when you approach the net: – – – – Net Shot Hairpin Net Shot Net Kill Net Lift NET SHOTS • Played from your net area to your opponents net area • Play with forehand and backhand • Angle shuttle to stretch width of court • Force opponent to hit poor return/lift • Goal is to have shuttle “tumble” tight to the net, into opponents frontcourt NET SHOT Cont’d • Grip depends on how you are hitting the shuttle (FH or BH side of body) • Keep racket in front of your body • Lunge forward with your racket leg • Reach out to strike shuttle high NET SHOT Cont’d • Racket head parallel to court • Let shuttle “bounce” off racket face • Push off lunge leg to return to your base HAIRPIN DROP SHOT • Similar mechanics to NET DROP • Played very low to court, use wrist to lift racket slightly to increase lift/tumble NET KILLS • Poor return from opponent • Opportunity to move into net, put shuttle away • DOWN, DOWN, DOWN • Get to the net quickly • Choke up, shorten stroke, more wrist mvm’t • Direction over velocity • Respect the net! NET LIFT • This is an underhand clear played from a position tight to the net • Used to push your opponent deep to their own back boundary line • You can play it at different trajectories depending on your need NET LIFT Cont’d • You can make this look like a Net Shot on your approach • Just before contact, unlock your wrist and really snap your wrist through the shot, sending it deep and over your opponents head • Becomes a great shot if you can disguise it well • After striking shuttle, push off your lunge leg, get back to your base position.
