It integrates a rapid review of previously learned material with advanced vocabulary and grammatical concepts. Emphasis will be placed on drawing all concepts together with the ability to comprehend and to express oneself in Spanish. Cultural activities center on the situations one would experience while visiting a Spanish speaking country. In addition to text and workbook activities, the student will be introduced to more advanced reading selections. PREREQUISITE: Recommendation of the Department. Scholastic dishonesty through the use of these materials, however, is unacceptable. In addition, any scholastic dishonesty (cheating) such as copying on tests or homework, etc., will not be tolerated. Class Preparation: Students are expected to come to class prepared to learn. This preparation includes: ● textbook (covered), Spanish/English dictionary, pen/pencil ● a three ring binder which should contain this course orientation, notes, verb charts, vocabulary, corrected tests and quizzes and all written assignments and handouts distributed in class. Grading Procedure: ● All grades will be established by a point system. Each assignment, quiz, test, or project will be assigned a numerical point value. ● Quizzes will be given frequently, at least once a week. Pop quizzes my also be given. ● Essays will be assigned, both in and out of the classroom. ● Oral presentations will be an important component of your grade. At least once each term, you will be assessed on your pronunciation, grammar, comprehension and fluency in Spanish. Often a poster or PowerPoint will accompany your presentation. There will be both individual and group presentations. A rubric explaining the grading and expectations of the presentation will be presented to you prior to each assignment. ● Random binder and book checks will count as quiz grades. ● Projects and presentations may be counted as a quiz or a test grade depending on the assignment. The following represents a breakdown of percentages for the final grade: ● Quizzes/Tests/Projects : 70 % ● Homework: 15 % ● Participation/ Classwork:* 15 % *Euros and, the Págame System and the discussion of videos are all part of the Participation/Classwork grade. Homework: Homework will usually be assigned each day. ○ Full credit will be given if the assignment is complete and there are few mistakes. ○ Partial credit will be given if the assignment is 75% complete and/or contains frequent mistakes and/or does not demonstrate student’s best effort. ○ No credit will be given if less than 50% of the assignment is complete and/or there are many mistakes and/or lack of effort is apparent. ○ Copying homework/classwork is cheating and both offenders will receive a zero. I do not accept late homework and there is no extra credit. The grade you earned is the grade you will receive. Classwork: Students are expcted to complete all classwork. Please remember to make-up classwork when you are absent. In addition to the grade for classwork completion, the Págame system will be used. The Págame system is designed to maintain a classroom environment where students are engaged and the focus is on student learning. All students start with a 100%. Págame means “pay me” and each págame is worth 5 points. When a student is not actively engaged in class and/or prepared to learn a págame will be issued and 5 points will be deducted from the overall grade. Reasons a “págame” will be issued are as follows: o (B) Student does not have the book and/or necessary materials. Students should come to class each day with all required materials. o (A) Student is not paying attention and/or is not engaged in the classroom activity. o (C) Student is not completing the assigned classwork. o (S) If we are a conducting a “Spanish only activity, págames will be given for speaking English. You may raise your hand and wait for permission to speak English or wait until after the activity. You must ask “¿Puedo hablar en inglés?” (May I speak in English?) All students have the opportunity to make-up two págames each term. In order to make-up a págame students must apologize in Spanish and say something positive about the class, the teacher or a classmate in Spanish. If you are always ready, prepared, on task and engaged in learning activities you will receive 100%. Participation: ● ● ● ○ Participation is a very important component of this class. The goal for learning a foreign language is to be able to communicate and this can only be practiced, reinforced and assessed through active participation in the classroom. You will have plenty of opportunities to speak Spanish in class. The more you express yourself in Spanish, the easier mastery becomes. By participating in class you are also checking your comprehension. If you get an answer wrong you will be able to learn from your mistake so that you will have a better understanding of the topic before being formally assessed. “Euros” will be distributed at times when you volunteer an answer in class. Once you collect four Euros please turn them in to me at the end of class and you will receive a check in my book. Twice a quarter you will be given a quiz grade based the amount of checks you have received. At times, participation and speaking in class will count as a quiz grade. Make-up Policy: ● If a student is absent it is his/her responsibility to get and complete class work and homework. ● For each day absent, a student has two school days to complete the work. This includes tests, quizzes and homework. Students who miss class due to a field trip, assembly or extra-curricular responsibility are still responsible for any assignment due on the next class day. ● There will be a binder with an outline of the class agenda that contains all of the material covered and assignments for each day. It is the students’ responsibility to check the binder for the day they were absent and write down necessary information. Handouts the student missed will be in the appropriate class folder. Absent work must be turned in on time in the appropriate class folder with the date the assignment was due written at the top. Therefore, there is no excuse for not having make-up work completed. ● The names of students who missed a quiz/test will be on the board and it is their responsibility to either get a pass from the teacher to come during AO or decide on a time to stay after school. Quizzes and tests may not be made up during class time and there are no retakes. Classroom Rules: ● Please be on time and prepared. This means that you are in your seats and ready to work when the bell rings. If you walk into class as or after the bell rings you will be marked late. First tardy is a warning. Second tardy is a teacher detention. Each additional tardy after the second offense will result in an office detention. ● Please be courteous and respectful!!!! This means not only to me, but to your fellow students as well. I encourage and expect class participation, but you need to be respectful when either I or other students are talking. ● Please be attentive and participate actively in all class activities. ● Please do not eat, drink or chew gum in class. ● Please do not write on desks or furniture. ● Please be responsible for the proper care and use of technological equipment. ● Please do not ask to use the bathroom in the middle of class unless it is an emergency. Tips for success: ● Be organized and take good notes. . It is essential to stay organized in Spanish class. In Spanish, everything you learn builds on something you already know. Therefore, you must stay organized to have notes and charts to refer to as a reference if you happen to forget something. If you keep up with your binder, you will have no problem having a successful year in this class. ● Come to class prepared to work. If you forget your book or homework you will not be allowed to leave the classroom to go to your locker and you will receive a zero. ● Pay attention and correct your mistakes as we go over classwork, homework, quizzes and tests. ● Participate in class. Speak without fear of mistakes. Listen carefully when people are speaking in class. ● Read Spanish as often as possible. The more Spanish you read and hear, the more you will learn. ● Write all assignments down and do all your homework. ● Study the grammar. This will enable you to communicate and write more effectively. Grammar is the base of every language. ● Use the dictionary. ● Use the online resources I have designed to help you learn Spanish! ● Ask for help! As you learn Spanish, everything you learn builds on something else you have previously learned. If you don’t understand something ask before it’s too late! If you start to fall behind it is very difficult to catch back up!! It’s common sense to fix a problem before it’s too big to be unfixable. It’s just like getting a flat tire while driving. If you ignore the problem and keep driving, it may seem okay for a little while, but eventually, you’re going to damage more than just the tire and the once simple problem will have turned into a large and unfixable one. If you would have simply pulled over and asked for help and changed the tire you would have been able to have gotten right back on the road and catch up with the rest of traffic. ¡ Buena suerte y bienvenidos a la clase de español!
