MEETING THE NEEDS OF ADOLESCENTS WITH CO-OCCURRING DISORDERS A three-day workshop sponsored by: Illinois Division of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse (DASA) and Illinois Co-Occurring Center for Excellence (ICOCE) University of Illinois – Chicago campus October 24-26, 2011 Presenters: Fred Dyer, PhD, CADC, Seth Eisenberg, MD, and Mark Sanders, LCSW, CADC According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, studies show that more than half of young persons with a substance use diagnosis also have a diagnosable mental illness. Studies also show that 63 percent of adolescents in counseling for co-occurring disorders do not make it to their second session. Day one will provide substance abuse counselors and other service professionals a history of co-occurring disorder services for adolescents. The session will also focus on psychopharmacological interventions for adolescents, the importance of educating clients and their parents on medications, and the role of the nonprescribing provider in providing effective medication-related continuity of care. Day two will focus on strategies for engaging adolescents with co-occurring disorders in the first five minutes of contact; exploring strength-based approaches to keeping them in treatment; and techniques for engaging the most difficult-toreach adolescents with co-occurring disorders. Day three will focus on best practices and continuity of care for adolescents with co-occurring disorders.
