Vocabulary, Comprehension and the Common Core- Adolescents
Abstract:
Limited vocabulary in the early grades results in an even greater learning gap for
adolescents. This session uses the concepts introduced in the first session to jumpstart vocabulary growth as it relates to tier 2 and 3 words (Beck, 2014) and
academic language. Intervention strategies for classroom discourse used by
successful SLPs at the middle and high school level will be demonstrated.
Foundational academic skills like writing definitions and using power words can
make a measurable difference.
