Vocabulary, Comprehension and the Common Core- Adolescents Abstract: Limited vocabulary in the early grades results in an even greater learning gap for adolescents. This session uses the concepts introduced in the first session to jumpstart vocabulary growth as it relates to tier 2 and 3 words (Beck, 2014) and academic language. Intervention strategies for classroom discourse used by successful SLPs at the middle and high school level will be demonstrated. Foundational academic skills like writing definitions and using power words can make a measurable difference.
