Lyon College Lesson Plan
Based on Charlotte Danielson’s Framework for Teaching
Intern: Drew Nolley
Subject: (AP) English
Date: April 22, 2013
Topic: TKAM (Arts: Photography)
Grade Level: 11
# of Students: 25
Set/Introduction
How will you complete each of the following tasks?

State learning objective(s)
1. Look at different photographs from the 1930s and 1960s that are linked to events from these eras and are also
discussed in the novel
 FDR’s Presidency
 The Great Depression
 Racism

Focus learning
I will focus the students’ learning by having a bell ringer that focuses on a picture called “Migrant Mother” by
Dorothea Lange. This picture is one of the most iconic of the Great Depression. I will have the students look at
this picture and have them write down a description of what all is happening in the picture.

Activate background experiences
Each of the photos I will discuss will come from parts of the unit that we as a class have already discussed
(FDR’s presidency, the Great Depression, racism)

Motivate students
I will motivate students by giving them participation points for this lesson, motivating them to answer the
questions I will have about the pictures
What is the relationship to past and future learning and how does this lesson fit within the discipline?
These pictures will connect to past and future learning in that they will show what conditions were like during the
time in which the story takes place and they will allow the students to get a feel for the time periods if they study
them again in any other classes
Learning Objectives
List your objectives below and explain your rationale for them.
Academic Objectives:
This lesson will focus on a few pictures that center around life in the 1930s and the 1960s. I will find a few pictures
and present them in a PowerPoint, which information about what is happening in each of the pictures. The pictures
will center around events that happened in the 1930s and 1960s, such as FDR, the Great Depression, and racism
Social/Emotional/Behavioral Objectives:
During this lecture, the students will take notes, which will be used later in the research paper. (One of the
requirements for the paper will be to incorporate one of the pictures I will show in this lesson into the paper and use
it as evidence for their topic).
Why have you chosen these objectives?
I have chosen these objectives because there really is not a lot to do with pictures like these but have the students
look at them and talk about the importance of the event captured in the photo.
How do your stated objectives take into account diverse and individualized learning needs?
This lesson and the stated objectives take into account diverse and individualized learning needs in that it will really
help visual-learning students understand the full effect of the lesson. Plus, when we discuss the photos and their
importance, auditory learners will be able to grasp the concept as well.
Standards Addressed
Arkansas Frameworks or Common Core Standards: Include codes and expectations.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RH.11-12.7 Integrate and evaluate multiple sources of information presented in
diverse formats and media (e.g., visually, quantitatively, as well as in words) in order to address a
question or solve a problem.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RH.11-12.8 Evaluate an author’s premises, claims, and evidence by corroborating or
challenging them with other information.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RH.11-12.9 Integrate information from diverse sources, both primary and secondary,
into a coherent understanding of an idea or event, noting discrepancies among sources
Procedures
Materials required:
What materials are required?
Computer, smart board, projector, PowerPoint; the students will need materials with which to take notes.
How do you plan to utilize these materials to reinforce skills & concepts?
I will use the computer and smart board and projector and PowerPoint to show the photos to the class. In the PPt, I
will have some information about each of the pictures for the students to take notes.
Grouping for instruction:
How will you group students for instruction?
In this lesson, I will keep the students on their own and will teach to the class as a whole
Why have chosen this grouping strategy?
I have chosen this grouping strategy because it is the best way for the students to learn about the events captured in
the pictures I will show them.
Teaching methods/Strategies:
What methods/strategies do you plan to use for this lesson?
I will use lecture for the lesson, but will ask a few questions throughout the lecture.
Why have you chosen these methods?
I have chosen these methods because, again, there really is no better way to discuss the pictures than by lecturing
about them to the class as a whole.
How are you extending students’ thinking?
I am extending students thinking in that I am bringing different types of sources into the lesson, yet these sources are
still discussing the same topics. The students will use these sources as evidence for their research paper topics,
giving them a different angle of discussion to use within their research papers.
How are you incorporating technology into this lesson? (If you are not, why not?)
I am incorporating technology in that I will be using a computer, smart board, and PowerPoint to display the images
sot that the whole class can see them during lecture.
Activities planned:
Describe the activities you have planned for this lesson.
For this lesson, I will give the students a homework assignment in which they will find a picture related to the three
main things my pictures will talk about (FDR, Great Depression, and racism) and write a short synopsis about the
picture and discuss some of the similar aspects we will cover in class about the pictures. They cannot use any of the
pictures I will be showing in class.
How do they connect with the learning objective/outcome?
This activity will connect with the objective and outcome in that it will show to me that they have grasped the
importance that the events captured in pictures from these time periods have in American history.
Special accommodations:
What accommodations will be made for specific students’ needs in this lesson?
I will do anything I need to do in order to accommodate any students’ needs for this lesson. If I need to modify, I
will as much as I can and need to.
Closure
In closing the lesson, how will you reinforce the learning objective(s) and verify that the students have
understood the content?
I will reinforce the lesson in two ways. First of all, I will have the students do the homework assignment for this
lesson in which they find a similar, topic-related picture and discuss its importance to events covered in TKAM.
Secondly, I will have the students take notes during this lesson. These notes can then later be used as support for the
students’ research paper topics.
Evaluation
How and when do you plan to evaluate student learning on the content of this lesson?
I will evaluate right after this lesson with a homework assignment in which the students will find a picture similar to
the ones I will show during class (though they cannot use any I showed in class) and have them right a short
synopsis of the picture and how the importance of the event captured in the photo relates to what we have been
discussing about the events in the novel. I will also evaluate this lesson in that I will see how well the students
understood the content when I read their research papers, looking to see how well they used their notes as evidence
for their topics.
Why have you chosen this approach to evaluation?
I have chosen this approach to evaluation because I believe that the lesson on photography will be a good piece of
evidence to use in the papers in that they will be primary sources because of the time(s) in which they were taken.
The students can use these photographs to help discuss whatever topic they will pick to write about in their research
papers.
How is your evaluation tied to your lesson objective?
The evaluation is tied to my lesson objective in that it will allow me to see how well the students understood my
point of bringing in photos from the different time periods. I will use these forms of evaluation in a way that will
allow me to see whether or not they fully understood the connections between the photos and the events that
occurred in the novel and in the time periods in which these pictures were taken.
What (if any) documentation will you use? Attach a sample/copy to the lesson plan.
I will use a PowerPoint of the pictures, complete with a little bit of information about each of the photos.
