BIOLOGY SYLLABUS INSTRUCTOR: Mr. White Brett.white@campbell.kyschools.us (best way to contact me) 859-635-4161 ext. 1203 Plan Period: 4th OBJECTIVE: To understand the living world around us, from the smallest virus to the largest mammal, through investigations, research, reading, and group interaction. CHAPTER OUTLINE: Each chapter will contain the same basic format with variations as required to meet specific objectives of the particular unit. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Engage in hands-on lab activities and inquiry based learning Develop content understanding through lecture based teaching Participate in group activities and projects Test review in the form of a study guide Assessment comprised of multiple choice, matching, essay, diagrams (announced 1 week prior) CLASS RULES: 1. Students will show respect toward one another and the teacher. 2. Students will participate and give their best effort on all assignments and discussions. CLASS OUTLINE: 1. When entering the class, all students should have a great attitude and be ready to work. 2. Every student should be in his or her assigned seat when the bell rings with the exception of any student needing a few extra minutes to collect make-up work. 3. Each student should come to class prepared with notebook, paper, and pencil or pen. 4. Once class has begun, please refrain from leaving your seat until the appropriate time. 5. During labs, all lab safety rules are in effect. Lab safety will be discussed prior to all labs. Any horseplay will not be tolerated and could result in a zero on the assignment. 6. Please feel comfortable asking questions during class. I only ask that before you speak you raise your hand or wait for an appropriate pause. 7. Class ends when I dismiss you and you should remain in your seat until that time. I will not dismiss you when students are out of their seats. GRADING: 1. Students are responsible for making up work on excused absences. 2. You have as many days as you were absent to complete work. The only exception is for tests. If you miss the day of a test you will need to take the test the day you return. If you miss two or more days prior to the test date, you have the number of days minus one to take the test. 3. Work turned in 1 day late will result in a 40% deduction. Work will not be accepted more than 1 day late. 4. Final Exam: TBA per CCHS exam schedule The final exam for biology students is the End Of Course Assessment. This exam comprises all units from the year and is worth 15% of students final grade. TEXTBOOK: You will be loaned a copy of the textbook “Biology” by Stephen Nowicki and required to return the book at the end of the school year. Failure to do so will result in the student being charged the price of the book. Damages to the book are also charged.
