Biology 12 Course Outline
Mrs. S. Bishop
Biology 12 is a course that focuses on human biology, allowing you as the student to
look at yourself and see how the diverse body systems are integrated to maintain
homeostasis. Learning outcomes follow a sequence from cell structure and simple
biochemical processes to the organs systems themselves.
I believe that you will find Biology 12 interesting and informative, but be prepared
for a fast and furious pace to cover a lot of material. Below is and brief outline of the
topics that will be covered and the approximate hour(s) scheduled for each.
Course Content:
1) Processes of Science (integrated throughout course)
 perform a variety of laboratory procedures
 design an experiment using the scientific method
 interpret data from a variety of sources
2) Cell Compounds and Biological Molecules (7-9hrs)
 water – the chemical of life
 acids/bases, buffers, biological pH and its importance to body systems
 biochemistry – proteins, carbohydrates, fats, and nucleic acids
3) Cell Physiology (25- 30hrs)
 DNA, RNA, and protein synthesis – the process, recombinant DNA and its uses,
mutations
 cell types
 cell structure and function (inter-relationships)
 cell membrane/cell wall and movement of particles across them
 enzymes – chemical composition, affect on biological reactions
4) Digestion (8-10hrs)
 parts and functions
 physical and chemical actions
 nutrition (disorders)
5) Circulatory (14- 16hrs)
 parts and functions (major vessels, the heart, factors affecting bp.)
 blood – parts and functions
 lymph and its functions
 fetal vs adult system (tissue fluid exchange)
 immunology
6) Respiratory (6-8hrs)
 parts and functions
 processes of breathing (role of substances)
 internal vs external
7) Urinary (9-11hrs)
 parts and interrelationships
 components of nephron
 urine production
 homeostasis of water and sodium levels in blood
8) Nervous (12-14hrs)
 the neuron
 nerve impulse – chemical reaction – the synapse
 divisions of nervous system and interrelationships
 the brain (parts and functions)
 structure and function of reflex arc
9) Reproductive (9-11hrs)
 parts and functions of male and female organs
 egg and sperm
 ovarian and uterine cycles
 production, regulation, and function of male and female hormones
10) Endocrine (throughout the course, summary at the end)
 identify the endocrine glands (what hormone? action? target?)
 negative and positive feedback
Tips for Success






Become familiar with new vocabulary at the start of each unit.
Complete all assigned reading and homework.
Ask questions.
Review on a regular basis.
See me teacher for extra help if you are absent or need further clarification on a
topic.
Complete review material prior to unit tests.
Expectations
1. Come Prepared
 Arrive to class with your textbook, binder (with loose –leaf paper), agenda book,
pen and pencil.
2. Late Assignments/Missed Tests and Quizzes
 Assigned homework is due at the beginning of class. If handed in during or at the
end of class it is considered late.
 If an assignment is late you will receive a maximum of 50%.
 If you are absent or late you will receive a zero for the assignments /quiz/test
completed during that time until I get a note or the office has been contacted by a
parent/guardian.
3. Late for Class
 If you arrive late, you may be required to make up the time at the end of class. As
per school policy, you will be required to serve a noon hour detention if tardiness
continues.
4. Absences
 Absence is not an excuse for missed assignments – you are responsible for all
work.
 If you know ahead of time that you will be absent, see your teacher before the
absence to find out what you will be missing.
 For unexpected absences, you are responsible for finding out what you missed in
one of the following ways:
a) Check my website (http://www.sd22.bc.ca/~bishop) it is
updated daily
b) Phone or e-mail someone in the class.
c) Have a parent/guardian phone the school for a homework
request to be picked up at the end of the day.
d) See me as soon as you return.
5. Classroom Behavior
 Respect yourself, others, the environment and learning.
 Participate in classroom activities and remain on task.
 Food and open drinks are NOT permitted in the classroom.
 Hats and electronic devices are NOT permitted in the classroom.
Evaluation

C-(50 – 59) F(0 – 49)
Marks are cumulative and will be recorded continually throughout the semester. Marks
will usually be updated and posted every few weeks. Remember, low marks become
increasingly difficult to change as the semester progresses.
Extra Help
Extra help is available during most lunch hours as I am usually in my classroom. You can drop
in for extra help, do homework, or make up missing work. If you want to be sure that I will
be available check with me ahead of time.
