Summer Literacy Activities for Families
BPS Library Summer Reading Challenge
 Read 20 minutes a day EVERY day of summer vacation! A separate letter details this
program. Prizes will be awarded for all who attempt the challenge. A special recognition
will be given to those who accomplish the challenge.
** Don’t forget that you can listen to audio books while traveling this summer. Listening to audio
books as a family in the car is a great way to pass time, use imagination, and show that books
are important!
Batesville Memorial Public Library Summer Reading Program: Dig Into Reading
 Sign-ups for all ages begins June 2. Earn prizes as you read this summer.
 There are also special programs for kids at BMPL to celebrate literacy:
o Tuesday, June 10 – Fantastic Fables
o Tuesday, June 17 – Funtime Magic
o Tuesday, June 24 – The Water Show
o Tuesday, July 8 – Silly Safari Animal Show
 Visit their website at http://ebatesville.com/library/ for more information.
Tumblebook Library (Ebooks for Ekids):
 Tumblebook library is a collection of electronic books. The students are able to read
along with the words as the computer reads the book to them. There are also puzzles,
games, and quizzes that coordinate with books to reinforce educational concepts such as
opposites, colors, sequencing, typing, verbs, spelling, matching, etc,. . .
 To access to this Tumblebook Library, visit the Batesville Memorial Public Library Kids
Page (http://ebatesville.com/kids1). Once on the
kids page homepage select Tumblebook Library.
Read Like a Pro — Call-a-Pacer 2014 on The
Indianapolis Public Library’s 24-hour Call-a-Story
telephone line. By dialing toll-free 877-275-9007, callers will hear recorded stories from Pacers
players who demonstrate their love of reading as a way to encourage young ones to develop the
habit.
Other Great Book Resources:
 Hoosier Family of Readers Literacy Initiative from the Indiana Department of Education
provides access to MyOn books. This is a digital library of over 3,000 books available

We Give Books – http://www.wegivebooks.org/ – For each book that is read online from
their digital library, a book is donatated to a cause that you select. Each month features
three new campaigns. It is a great way of, “combining the joy of reading with the power
of helping others.”
Storyline Online - http://www.storylineonline.net/ - Is a website maintained by the Screen
Actors Guild Foundation. It features famous actors reading their favorite children’s story.
Many companies offer summer reading promotions. Some places to start include: Barnes and
Noble, Borders, Half Price Books, Chuckie Cheese. I’m sure there are many more available!
Recommended Reading Lists
There are numerous reading lists available; however, here are links to a few great ones:
 Children’s Choice Booklist - Children themselves evaluate the books. This list is
sponsored by the International Reading Association.
http://www.reading.org/resources/booklists/childrenschoices.aspx
 The New York Public Library offers 100 Picture Books Everyone Should Know at
http://kids.nypl.org/reading/recommended2.cfm?ListID=61
 The American Library Association has recommended books for children and lists of
award winners at http://www.ala.org
**Have your children “earn” electronic time by reading. Each minute reading earns a minute on
an electronic device or TV show. **Some reading experts also suggest turning off the sound and
turning on the closed captioning on the TV.
Have a great summer!
