COMPUTER & Networking Technology This program is designed to aid the student in developing the knowledge and skills that will prepare him or her for employment in a variety of Information Support and Services, Networking support and Services positions. The program is student-centered with a clearly defined plan of individual study. Each student will work with the instructor and/or counselor to complete their Individual Plan of Study which will identify the Career Major(s) the student will pursue. HOW YOU WILL LEARN Curriculum will be presented in a LAP (Learning Activity Package) or module format and will be facilitated by the instructor. Program content will be gin with a basic core curriculum set by the Business Education Division of the Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education. Students will have the option to decide upon Career Majors from the following Career Pathways: Information Support and Services as well as Network Systems. After successful completion of each Career Major, the student may sit for the appropriate certification tests. Within each Career Pathway there are one or more state or nationally-recognized certification opportunities. WHEN CLASSES MEET Persons may attend either the morning or/and afternoon sessions. The morning session meets daily from 8:15 until 11:00 a.m. and the afternoon session meets daily from 12:30 until 3:15 p.m. High school juniors and seniors (upon successful completion of a year) will earn three units of elective credits/year toward their high school graduation requirements. Leadership Training – All students will learn teamwork skills and benefits of community service. These skills will be enhanced through membership in Business Professionals of America. Members of this student organization learn and develop through the challenges of scholarship, citizenship and leadership in school and community activities. Cisco technicians are in high demand and their staff of educators has developed a fourcourse, computer-based training curriculum with hands-on labs where students can learn the basics of Cisco Router operations. When training is completed they can take the CCNA exam at a nearby Prometric or View testing center. Also listed below are other courses available in our Cisco Academy. Each of these courses is one semester in length. IT Essentials I: PC Hardware and Software, sponsored by Hewlett-Packard Company, presents an in-depth exposure to computer hardware and operating systems. This is the Computer Repair and Networking foundational course required of all enrolled students. Students learn the functionality of hardware and software components as well as suggested best practices in maintenance and safety issues. This course helps students prepare for CompTIA's A+ certification. IT Essentials II: Network Operating Systems, sponsored by Hewlett-Packard Company, is an intensive introduction to multi-user, multi-tasking network operating systems. Characteristics of the Linux, Windows 2000, NT, XP and Vista operating systems will be discussed. Students will explore a variety of topics including installation procedures, security issues, back up procedures and remote access. This course helps students prepare for CompTIA’s Server+ certification. ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR: Burl Spears, has been teaching this class since 1984. He holds a Master's degree in Education and is a National Board Certified Teacher. He is also a Certified Novell Administrator (CNA), a CompTIA A+, Server+, I-Net+ and Network+ certified technician, a Cisco Certified Network Administrator (CCNA), and a Microsoft Certified Professional. He taught in various public schools for 7 years before coming to the Technology Center and has been a freelance computer consultant and technician since 1982.
