GRADES

Your grade will be determined by percentages that will equal 100%. "Bonus" points will be awarded throughout the semester as extra credit. You may schedule a conference with me at any time to discuss your grades. Your grades will be based on the following:

HOMEWORK

Homework will be assigned. Homework is worth 10% of final grade. LATE HOMEWORK WILL NOT BE

ACCEPTED! If you are absent the day a homework assignment is due, it is the student’s responsibility to turn in the assignment to me when you return to school.

VOCABULARY

Vocabulary lists will be assigned every Monday. A vocabulary test and assignment will be due EACH FRIDAY.

Vocabulary is worth 20% of your final grade.

Vocabulary Assignment

Each week you must turn in a vocabulary web the following for the vocabulary words assigned that week:

 Synonym/Antonym

 Part of Speech

 Complex Sentence

 Word Origin

 Definition

Twice a month you will be asked to write using vocabulary words assigned for that month. (Writer’s

Notebook)

Vocabulary Test

You are expected to know the correct definition, part of speech, spelling and possible synonyms or antonyms of each vocabulary word assigned for that week. Upon absences, all vocabulary quizzes must be made up on my Make-up Day.

WRITING ASSIGNMENTS

WRITING IS A PROCESS! You will be graded on this process.

PROJECTS/PRESENTATIONS

Throughout the year you will be assigned various projects or presentations to complete. These may or may not include group activities. All projects and/or presentations are expected to be completed on time.

TESTS/STUDY GUIDES

Quizzes, tests, and/or study guides may be assigned to ensure that you are keeping up with your course work. You will be given at least one week notice before a test. Test corrections will be allowed on major tests.

Tests/Major Writing Assignments/Projects will count 50% toward final grade.

Daily Oral Language will count 20% toward final grade.

LATE ASSIGNMENTS

All assignments (homework, papers, projects, etc.) are expected to be turned in by the due date.

Homework

Homework will not be accepted late!

Writing assignments

Writing assignments must be handed to me in your Writer’s Notebook. DO NOT LEAVE YOUR

PAPER ON MY DESK! If a paper is not turned in on time, you MAY NOT turn it in.

Presentations

If you are assigned a day to present, you are obligated to be in class on that date. Failure to present on the day you were assigned will result in a "0" for that presentation.

MAKE-UP WORK

If you are absent from class, it is your responsibility to get the work you missed (Please note that if you are dismissed early from school because of a sport or other reason, you are still expected to hand in assignments due that day and get the work you will miss). Get notes from a classmate. Absences are not excuses for late writing assignments, projects or presentations that were previously assigned. Tests/Writing Assignments must be made up on my Make-Up Day. A student who chooses not to make up a test will receive a "0" for that test.

CHEATING/PLAGIARISM POLICY

Plagiarism and cheating is a serious breach of the student honor code. Any student caught cheating or plagiarizing will receive a “0” for that test/assignment.

Please sign the form below to verify that you have received and understand the above polices and expectations.

Please share this packet with your parent/guardian and have them sign below as well. I am looking forward to a very successful and fun year with each of you! And remember, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” ~Nelson Mandela
