Pre-requisite: CHM 1025L with a grade of C or better or equivalent previous chemistry
laboratory experience. THIS lab course is NOT for beginners (i.e., someone who has never
done chemistry laboratory experiments.
Demonstrations are not considered to be lab experience, therefore would not meet the
course pre-requisite criteria.)
Co-requisite: CHM 2045. If you are not currently enrolled in CHM 2045 on the Clearwater
Campus of SPC, you will need to provide proof of enrollment elsewhere. If you withdraw
or stop attending lecture, you will be withdrawn from this lab class.
RELIABLE AND CONTINUOUS INTERNET ACCESS FOR MyCourses. There are no exceptions
to this requirement. Course information, notices, worksheets, etc. will be posted on
MyCourses. You should check the MyCourses class site at least 3 times a week. If I need to
contact you, I will do so through the MyCourses email. You will need to understand how to
access and navigate the MyCourses site prior to attending the first day of class. Tutorials
and Help information for the MyCourses are located on the login page of the MyCourses
website.
The laboratory meets once a week on Monday (Section 741) or Wednesday (Section
1519) in NM 252, 7:00 pm. Tardiness for these laboratory classes will not be tolerated.
There is a ZERO tolerance policy with regards to tardiness and violation of the safety and
waste disposal procedures. Incidences of this type will DIRECTLY affect your final grade.
Safety and Conduct in the Lab:


Safety: This is the number one priority in this lab. It is YOUR responsibility to know and
follow the rules and procedures at all times. Prior to signing the Safety Rules Form, be sure
that you have read the document thoroughly. Safety rules for your reference are listed in
the Lab Handbook.
Appropriate dress must be worn to lab or you will not be allowed to stay for the lab work
and you will receive an unexcused absence and a grade of zero for that day.
o Clothing must completely cover you from neck to knees (no bare midriffs or
plunging necklines.) Shoulders must be covered; you must have short or long
sleeves; no loose sleeves, no tank tops, etc.
o Shoes must completely cover your feet; no sandals, flipflops, clogs, etc.
o Long hair must be tied back.
o Hats must be removed.

o All books, purses and other personal items must be stored out of the way so that
they do not interfere with the safe conductance of the lab. (Do NOT place on the
floor where someone can trip over them.)
o Handle all chemicals, glassware, burners, and other lab equipment appropriately
and carefully.
o Food and drink may not be brought into or consumed in the lab. No gum, tobacco
or cosmetic applications.
o Refrain from wearing fragrance to class, including, but not
limited to cologne, after-shave, and scented lotions. Some
people are sensitive or highly allergic to these.
o Read all chemical labels on containers THREE times: before you pick it up, while you
have it in hand (as you are dispensing) and when you put it back down. Many
mishaps can be avoided this way. Many chemical names are formulas sound and
look alike. Never assume anything!
o Each student is responsible for cleaning up any spills or broken items.
o Each student is responsible for cleaning all used items and returning them to their
appropriate place.
o Each student is responsible for replacing all caps and making sure that chemicals do
not become contaminated. Droppers from solutions should never touch anything
but the solution inside the bottle. Do NOT insert droppers into your test tube or
other container. This will contaminate the solution.
o Each student is responsible for making sure that the sinks are free of debris and
that the work area is clean before leaving. If there are repeated violations of this
policy, all students at the particular table will have points deducted from their lab
grade.
o COMMON SENSE goes a long way! Any student who jeopardizes the safety of
anyone in the lab will be asked to leave and may be withdrawn.
o You, individually, are held fully responsible for knowing and following all safety
rules as well as written and verbal instructions given by the instructor. Failure to
adhere to the rules and policies will jeopardize your status in this lab.
o You may leave the lab upon completion of the work, cleaning of all glassware and
equipment used as well as cleaning of your work area. Do not dispose of solids
down the sink! Check sinks before you leave and throw away all trash. Wipe your
counters. All students at a table will receive a 5 point deduction from a lab report
for that day’s work if anything is left out or unclean.
o I reserve the right to move students around to work at different tables and/or with
different partners at any given time.
Attendance Policy:

100% attendance is required. You will be automatically withdrawn from lab class if you
miss more than one lab period prior to the withdrawal date of March 25, 2015, you may be
subject to administrative withdrawal, receiving a grade of WF. Lecture and lab are co-

requisite classes. If you withdraw from or stop attending lecture, you must and will be
withdrawn from lab, no exceptions.

There are no scheduled make-up labs or exams as they are set up only for the scheduled
week. You may not, under any circumstances, miss an exam because NO make up will be
given and you will receive a grade of zero for that exam. This policy is strictly enforced.
You will receive a grade of zero for that exam and your final grade will reflect that grade.

Laboratory exams are practical in nature and will be given only in the Laboratory. NO
EXCEPTIONS.

Tardiness to any lab is not acceptable. You must be in your seat prior to the beginning of
lab. If you are late for a quiz, you may not have time to complete it. If you miss the
instructor’s discussion at the beginning of lab, you will miss important explanations,
therefore would be unsafe in the lab. Under no circumstances will you be admitted to lab
if you miss more than five minutes of the discussion. Beginning the second week of
classes, the door will be locked. You will receive a zero for that lab. Under no
circumstances can any quiz be made up. If you miss it, you will receive a zero for that
quiz. 2 late arrivals will be equal to one unexcused absence. Additionally, 5 points will be
deducted from your final grade. You may leave the lab upon completion of the work,
cleaning of all glassware and equipment used as well as cleaning of your work area. Do not
dispose of solids down the sink! Check sinks before you leave and throw away all trash.

Supplies to be furnished by each student:

Prior to the first lab experiment, each student must obtain and bring to
the lab the items listed below. Each student will be checked for the items and will not
be permitted to stay for lab class if the lab notebook, safety goggles, lab
coat, or pre/post lab report are not present. This will result in one unexcused absence
and a grade of zero for the day. All items are available at the Clearwater Campus
Bookstore.
o
Custom CHM 2045L Lab Manual (ISBN: 9781285921792). Since this is a custom
manual, you will need to purchase it from the campus bookstore.
o

Lab coat – preferably knee length.
o
These goggles must seal around the eye area, as per safety
rules. The slip-on type is not permitted.
Safety goggles (not the slip on type), approved for chemical splashes.

o TI-30Xa, TI-30XIIs or similar calculator. No engineering or graphing calculators are
permitted, nor any calculator that has advanced functions, such as
numerator/denominator display, answers that are put into correct number of
significant figures, etc. Other brands are fine also, but make sure that they meet
the guidelines.
o A bound composition-style notebook. (this will be your lab notebook). This can be
wide-, college- or grid ruled. No loose leaf or spiral bound allowed or accepted.
o Suggested: Bring a container or bar of hand soap and matches or lighter to keep in
your drawer. (Strikers are provided to light burners.)
The following will not be permitted in this class:





Cellular telephones unless the ringer is turned off and phone is put away. Cell
phones may not be used in the classroom or lab for any reason, including calculator usage.
Cell phones that are taken out during class will be confiscated. 1 point will be deducted
from your final overall grade for each cell phone disruption (ringing, usage, etc.). Students
who have or take a cell phone out during a quiz or exam will be given a ZERO for that test.
Except for an approved calculator, no other electronic device may be used or out at any
time during class or exams.
Personal conversations while instructor is lecturing.
Tardiness
Failure to strictly adhere to safety rules and policies. This includes improper dress as
outlined in the safety rules policy. Note: If you arrive to lab improperly dressed, you will
not be permitted to stay in lab. This means that you will receive a zero for that day.
REQUIRED ASSIGNMENTS:
1. Read the introductory material pertaining to each experiment BEFORE the scheduled lab.
2. In your own words, write the steps pertaining to in your lab notebook (BEFORE coming to
lab). You will need to follow the procedure in your lab notebook (not in your lab manual)
each day in lab, so write your procedure carefully! Leave room to record data, perform
calculations, etc. This work must be in pen. The idea is to be able to follow YOUR written
instructions and not have to refer to the lab manual.

3. As you go through the procedure in lab, take DETAILED notes in your notebook. Record
masses/volumes used, colors/odors detected, reactions performed, data, etc. DO NOT
WAIT FOR YOUR LAB REPORT TO BE RETURNED. Your notebook can be used during any
quiz as a resource.
4. Selected pre- and post- lab assignments from your lab manual will be collected for a grade.
If you have a pre-lab assignment, it will be due at the beginning of the lab period and will
not be accepted late. Post lab assignments are due either at the end of a lab period or at
the beginning of the following lab period, as per your instructor’s direction and will not be
accepted late.
TESTING / GRADING POLICY:
Criteria for grading in-class and experimental procedures are as follows:






Ability to follow directions, both written and oral.
Ability to follow correct experimental procedures.
Ability to follow safety rules and lab course policies.
Dexterity in handling laboratory equipment properly and safely.
Accuracy in calculations, experimental outcomes, use of critical thinking skills as
documented in your lab notebook, pre- and post lab reports, quizzes, and exams.
Preparedness to perform the experiment.
